I Love You, Stinky Face, by Lisa Mccourt

A vividly illustrated bedtime story that shows how the unconditional love of a mother can be tested through the relentless questions of her little boy.

"But Mama, but Mama, what if I were a super smelly skunk, and I smelled so bad that my name was Stinky Face?"

Mothers love their children and this unconditional love is truly tested in I Love You, Stinky Face. Lisa McCourt and Cyd Moore beautifully weave a reassuring tale of the love and affection of a parent. The imaginative son turns himself into a meat-eating dinosaur, a swamp creature and much, much more before being satisfied with the fact that no matter how stinky he is or how slimy of a creature he could possibly be, he is loved and nothing will change that.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1. A child tucked into bed delays going to sleep, needing reassurance of her mother's love. The youngster asks, "Would you still love me....if I were a big scary ape?" or "a super smelly skunk" or "a terrible meat-eating dinosaur," and the list continues. No matter what horrible creature is imagined, Mama says she will always love and care for her child. Warm pastel drawings sweetly illustrate the story; the imaginary creatures are appealing rather than frightening. Reminiscent of Margaret Wise Brown's The Runaway Bunny (HarperCollins, 1942) and Kady Denton's Would They Love a Lion? (Kingfisher, 1995), this is a good choice for storytime or one-on-one sharing.?Elizabeth Trotter, Scott County Public Library, Georgetown, KY

Imagination will soar!
By Coco de Paul
This book is a must have for all little boys and girls! A mother is putting her sweet child to bed and as they go through their nightly routine, the child's imagination runs wild with scenarios in which the love from the mother is questioned. A dinosaur rips up the sheets, a skunky is super stinky and an alligator with sharp teeth needs help brushing it's teeth. In all cases, the mother replies with different ways she would find to love her child. This sweet book is my son's newest favorite and he wants me to read it daily. He is three and first became entranced by Merry Christmas Stinky Face (highly recommend as well) so I bought this book after reading it. My favorite aspect of the book is that the child is referred to as child and not a boy or a girl and the character could easily be a boy or a girl, so the book is fitting for everyone and feels personal to whomever it may be read to...it would be a great addition to any library!

One of my favorites
By Christy Tanner
This is by far one of my very favorite children's books that I read to my daughters. The flow of the story is almost musical, and the premise is absolutely adorable. The illustrations are well done and very engaging. My two year old has memorized parts of the book already and my one year old is starting to retain parts as well. The first hard cover board book we had of this was so well loved that we ended up needing to get a second one. That's not a knock on the quality of the book, just commentary on my children. I would buy this book ten times over.

KidLit Gem Recommendation: I LOVE YOU STINKYFACE
By Anna Marras
“Then I would look right into your one eye and say, “I love you,” and I would sing to you until your one droopy eyelid finally closed and you fell fast asleep.” ~ I Love You, Stinkyface

How do you write a picture book that allows mothers to express their unconditional love for their children in a non-gooey, non-sappy, non-gushy way (even when we are gooey, sappy, and gushy)? Author Lisa McCourt knows. You insert the magic word: “stinky.” Add “dinosaurs,” “monsters,” and “aliens,” and gooey, sappy, gushy mothers can get away with saying the “l” word eleven times in a row–thirteen if you read the front and back covers. Love, love, love!

Cyd Moore’s thoughtful and playful illustrations, particularly the child’s embrace of the mother’s face and the one-eyed monster in pajamas, lift the story to a whole new level of wonderful. Children will love looking for the monkey, bunny, toucan, and tin man.
