Praise for this honest journey into perceptions of that part of our world we humans have closed and know not its vastness or oneness. We see only a tiny spectrum of light, meaning we see only a tiny spectrum of reality. By opening our minds to new possibilities we thus are enable to grow. Michael has pioneered whole new areas of consciousness and communication with all life.
I had to get a break from the secular world of matter and lust for money so as to attain peace of mind and then was able to read this these two books with more openness. Beautiful, our world is so much more than we think or have been taught.

Completely Tremendous Book

This book was a complete delight. I was bowled over by the author's experiences with Pan. Wow. I am envious. Wish this could happen to me too! His writing is a pleasure to read and opens one's imagination in ecstatic ways.
I was so moved , I ordered another of his books . No doubt I'll end up reading everything he's written....

excellent introduction to metaphysical journeying

Well-written accounts of Michael Roads metaphysical journeys into Nature under the tutelage of Pan, the Spirit of Nature, these two books provide an excellent introduction to Roads' quest to find his higher self. It is a good idea to read these BEFORE his trilogy JOURNEY INTO LOVE, which expands on these themes. Roads self-deprecating humor helps ground the reader as the author confronts the greater reality beyond everyday human experience. Anyone interested in the metaphysical should gobble these right up.

Nice book with good details and delightful examples

I've always liked Skip's teaching style and this book truely reflects that as well. It's got all the ingredients in a good lesson: principles, supporting ideas, and germane examples to demonstrate the applicaion of the ideas.

This book breaks down the studying process into clear steps. Which makes it easy to follow. As usual, Skip uses alot of cool quotes to express his ideas. I personally like these quotes very much. I also like the illustrations used in this book to explain their intents. They help me understand the ideas better.

I am currently planning a new Sunday school class on Bible study techniques, I am using this book extensively in my lesson planning.

The economic success of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was due as much to its strict Puritan society as to any market factors, contends University of Virginia historian Innes (Work and Labor in Early America, Univ. of North Carolina Pr., 1988). Through various institutions in their civil society, Puritan leaders inculcated the Protestant work ethic and linked it with the concept of honest labor leading to private ownership. Civic government substituted for trade guilds by enforcing quality control of the colony's products. The Puritans used the church, the family, and the General Court to create a moral capitalism that enabled the colonists to gain a high standard of living without becoming corrupted by it. Innes examines Puritan economic success in detail and provides extensive bibliographic notes. University of Virginia history professor Innes argues, however, that a Puritan-influenced, communally based individualism allowed Massachusetts Bay colonists to pursue "honest gaine," with a high value placed on "work, enterprise, sacrifice, and deferred gratification," which also fostered a thriving capitalism. It was, though, a capitalism tempered by the realization that there was a link between land ownership and productive labor. Innes goes on to show, providing more than 50 pages of notes, how industrial New England, with its ironworks, shipyards, and fisheries, grew from the Puritans' rocky, brutally cold foothold. Rehabilitating the Puritans

The first reviewer for the work gives an admirable and accurate summary of its main theses, so I will cut to the chase and begin my critique. I am one of the undergraduates who had the good fortune to actually read this book for Innes' course in Colonial American history at U.Va. As such, my opinion of the book may be skewed by the context in which I read it. In the book, Innes makes an admirable effort in making the Puritans understandable to the modern reader. He cogently outlines the foundational ethic of Puritans and how its internal paradoxes fostered constant striving for social justice and economic prosperity. The book is useful in dispelling much of the fairy tale images of early American history that popular culture feeds us. Readers shouldn't fear the word "economic" in the subtitle; the text is dense but not inaccessible. Nevertheless, the book IS an undergraduate level textbook, and it is rather substantial. I recommend it only for the reader with a real passion for the subject matter.

Innes argues that the economic success of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was due to the Puritans creation of a society in which capitalism, community, and civil society were connected. The Protestant work ethic, which was taught in the household, pulpit, meetinghouse, and assembly, instructed that God provided every man with a calling and it was his duty to work hard at it. This religious-based work ethic coupled with the belief that profit taking was fine as long as the profits were used to help others (the linking of individual and collective well-being) encouraged the development, within the community, of an individual-based capitalism. These two beliefs endorsed "striving" behavior and enterprise which led to the growth of the economy.

You Don't Have to be a Teenager to Enjoy this Book!

I was literally transported back to age 14 when the rights of passage between childhood and adulthood were marked by success and failure in a competitive setting. "Stepping Up" was a book I could not put down. There is a little of Ernie Dolan in all of us. The author obviously knows his hoops and the basketball action is so real I was reminded of the "words eye view" that only the maestro Chick Hearn could deliver. It is even more difficult to convey the action in written form than verbal form. Mark Fink is a fabulous writer, who definitely gets it, delivers and has "stepped up" big time.

For Young Hoops Fanatics

When it comes to YA, there are suspension bridges of disbelief and there are suspension bridges of disbelief. This one puts the Golden Gate to shame. So if you're a fan of realistic YA in the sports genre, you'll probably get a few chuckles out of this and write a two-word review: "Yeah, right." Three stars.

But I'll be kind and take it from the point of view of a middle school-aged boy who loves basketball and hates reading, loves large font and hates reading, and loves happy endings and hates reading. From that point of view, this is a 3-pointer instead of a 3-star-er. And it hits from well outside the arc, too.

For one, it's about two best friends who go to a basketball camp where a near-tragedy unfolds endangering lives and NO PARENTS ARE CONTACTED. The boys are 14, so I guess you'd expect as much, right? (JK, as they say.) As for happy endings, Mark Fink does not settle for one -- he runs up the score by taking our protagonist seven years into the future for even more good news. Whew! One can dream, I guess, and sometimes books are the medium for that dreaming.

All that said, I'll praise the book on two counts especially: As with John Coy, you get some easily-read but technically-accurate description of game action. A lot of boys speak that language. The other highlight is the humor. Fink hits the right note in back-and-forth badinage, and I found myself chuckling at some of the one-liners. Better yet, some of it is put-down humor. Now there's a writer who knows his audience.

For its demographic, STEPPING UP is a wise purchase. It's fairly clean with only one or two mild profanities. Beyond that (and under its bridge), the book is about as middle reader-friendly as you're going to get and may even appeal to the struggling reader in high school. Keeping my inner cynic at arms length, then, I'd say not bad -- not bad at all.

Great book for middle school boys!

Ernie and his best friend Mike go to summer camp every year, and this year, Mike chooses basketball camp. Ernie's okay with that until one of the other campers, Rick Craig, gives him a hard time about his game and about his stuttering, saddling him with the nickname "Choke". Mike excels in basketball and gets along with the other boys well, while Ernie struggles. I loved this paragraph (page 51): Life is not fair if an idiot like Craig can be so popular. I wonder what it's like to be the guy everyone respects and wants to hang with. Just once, I'd like to be that guy."

Ernie gets his chance after Mike and Rick make some bad decisions and Ernie saves them from a fire. Ernie rockets to popularity, but as with every element in this book, this rise is believable, and Ernie's reaction to it seems true-to-life. Once again, Mr. Fink nails the teen-age voice, describes the angst Ernie feels at a variety of situations with pitch-perfect detail, AND adds basketball plays to the mix. Exactly what I want.

An excellent resource for inspiration, techniques and safety

After reading Cindy Jenkins' humorous and informative "Making Glass Beads", I was skeptical about another publication addressing additional techniques and scientific aspects of lampworking. However, Mr. Dunham's book provides just the right combination of inspirational quotes, technical direction and vital safety information that every artisan needs, from hobbyist to the more serious glass artist. Techniques begin with simple explanations of the physical properties of glass, and move through graduated levels of complexity at a perfect pace. Mr. Dunham's writing style is honest and encouraging, and he willingly shares his own observations in a way that demonstrates thorough knowledge of his subject without the reader needing a Physics 101 course! While exhorting the reader to practice and expand creativity through hands-on experience, Mr. Dunham discusses important safety and ergonomic aspects of lampworking. The illustrations are clear and support the text well; inserting a gallery of contemporary glasswork was a stroke of pure genius. This book will serve as an invaluable resource for technical information on glass compatibility, studio set-up and many other essential components of the lampworking process, all written in easily understandable language.

covering everything from the technical to technique, with lots of photos and drawings, and a great list of references to other resources.
