The book was written for both veteran and rookie teams - we talked with dozens of teams about their experiences with FLL and gathered tips, advice, worksheets, and more. The book has over a dozen downloadable files for use by teams (website address provided in the book) that can be modified as desired.

The book has 16 chapters in all plus one appendices. Chapters include:

About the Author

Jonathan Daudelin has been competing in FLL since age 13. A Great Reference for Both New and Old Teams!

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a program for middle-school age children to explore robotics and a global theme that has grown to be a worldwide phenomenon involving thousands of children and adults. While that sounds very impressive, it's also very intimidating. With so many people already involved, how can a new person start a team? Is there a right way? How can a team grow and succeed?

FIRST LEGO League: The Unofficial Guide, by James Floyd Kelly and Jonathan Daudelin, is an excellent introduction to FLL for those wanting to start a team. Going through a step-by-step formula, the book explains everything about FLL from information about the program itself to starting a team and competing.

Every step is almost exhaustively documented - I say almost because the writing style is far from exhausting. The books voice is a very relaxed one, much like a tour guide that really enjoys talking about his tour route. Such points as fundraising and team management are covered in the book, which are very important yet not really mentioned anywhere else.

Building the team is a large component of the book, but so is building with the MINDSTORMS system, and a majority of the book is devoted to building and programming robots. Again, the text is engaging and step-by-step, showing how and more importantly, why a process or build method is advantageous. One inadvertent side effect of reading this is realizing what a successful team has to know - while my respect for FLL competitors is high, the Unofficial Guide gave me a much higher appreciation of the work needed to make a quality team.

And I guess that's the best way to describe this book - it's a quality book that I strongly recommend. For a group wanting to form a new team, this will be an invaluable resource to guide the kids (and adults) to competition. For those who have been in FLL, this book is also good because it has some nice tips and advice - the sidebar about test driving a robot on page 170 is a great piece of advice to both new and experienced teams!

And it has me wishing I could start a team...

FLL, from start to end, a must have for coaches and teams

This book is a must have for all the First LEGO League teams, and their coaches.
Although I'm an expert on LEGO MINDSTORMS, I still consider this book good value for money, it contains a lot of expert tips and tricks in getting your team organized and well set for the tournament. The easy writing style is even for non native English readers good to read. The layout is comfortable, and the side notes are a real added value.

The first chapters handle some background that is good to know, to make the team enthusiastic about the FLL games.
Chapter 4 contains a downloadable fundraising letter that shows that FLL goes beyond playing with LEGO robots, it also explains how to do business in real live.
Then the chapters about managing the team, is a must read for new coaches, but also experienced managers could learn form it.
The technical chapters, near the end of the book, handle a lot of tips and tricks on how to improve your LEGO robot and its program. I consider that many teams still can learn from these chapters. During several FLL finals, I was present as a "technical first aid doctor" for the teams that ran into "unforeseen" problems. I'm sure with this book at hand those problems would not have occurred.

This book really handles FLL form start to end, and encourages you to participate in the Fist LEGO League.

Something for Rookie and Veteran FLL teams

There is something for all FLL teams, both rookie and veterans in this book. Also, if you are checking out FLL and trying to decide if you want to begin a team, this is the place to get the information necessary to make that decision. I have been involved in FLL for over 6 years and I found helpful information as I read through FIRST LEGO League: The Unofficial Guide.

All new FLL teams need this book. The whole program is laid out clearly, with not only necessary information, but also with much helpful additional information. There is so much to learn in FLL and this book will guide you from how to start a team, how to do fundraising, how to handle team meetings, how to do basic robot buidling and programming, how to tackle the research project and much more, then onto what to expect at a tournament and beyond.

The format of this book is easy to read and understand. Additionally, it is laid out in such a way, that you can easily find the topic you need or you can choose to start at the beginning and read all the way through.

You will not be dissapointed by this book.

This old man knows how to tell the story :)

This text is unique as it is written for those students interested in both the insight and the GPA! The text covers almost all topics of vectors and matrices required for a modern control using state space approach. The author has devoted his time to teach students how to see through vectors&matrices and how to master the required mathematics in a very concise manner. What makes this book unique is its illustrated and solved examples in the end of each chapter.

After you master the mathematics through Chapter 8. You will find the later chapters a piece of cake :). A nice introductory chapter on optimal control and another on nonlinear control in the end of the book make you eager to find other hardcover texts on these advanced topics. Unfortunately, you might not find them as concise and to the point as this text!

As a student, you might be more interested in (solved) examples. A (little) theory wouldn't bite as well. In this book the theory to example ratio is definitely within the range you would like to see.

We adopted this book in our graduate courseof linear systems and controls. i was the TA of that course. I have never seen such an elegent utilization of Vector Spaces and Matrix Theory to explain the system concepts and its controlled behaviour. It really is the engineering text which builds upon the mathematical concepts.Beauty of the book is the its implicit presentation of the concepts which challenges the intution of the reader.End chapter problems and solved exercises enhance the skills in student's quiver.i recommend that any student who wants to build a firm engineering basics should surely spend his thoughts on the material presented in the book.

Outstanding Textbook - Highly Recommended

I used this textbook for a graduate course in state space methods. This is the best textbook I have seen on the subject. Covers the necessary theory and then works out prenty of problems illustrating the ideas. I refer to it often in my other graduate classes.

Rejecting historians' consensus that Hitler and his mistress, Eva Braun, committed suicide in the Nazi underground bunker as Allied forces took Berlin, British surgeon and forensic expert Thomas (The Murder of Rudolf Hess) asserts that the two partially charred corpses found by Soviet troops were actually those of Hitler-and a substitute for Braun, wearing one of her dresses. In his scenario, SS guards murdered Hitler, rather than allow a degenerate, raving Fuhrer to fall into Soviet clutches, and let Braun escape. Hitler, he further speculates, suffered from Parkinson's disease, which made him a partially paralyzed, grossly weakened, uncontrollably shaking insomniac. Thomas bases his detailed analysis, which raises far more questions than it answers, on Russian State Archive material comprising alleged skull fragments of Hitler and Braun, as well as on their dental records and on six folios of documents found with the skulls. Using Paraguayan police files released in 1993, Thomas concludes that Martin Bormann, Hitler's personal secretary, survived the bunker, apparently moving to Paraguay in 1956. Photos.

Thomas, a British surgeon and author (The Murder of Rudolph Hess, 1979), uses forensic evidence from newly opened archives in the former Soviet Union and from Paraguay to reach his conclusions about the final days of Hitler and Martin Bormann. Most historians believe that Hitler committed suicide and that Eva Braun died with him. Thomas counters that Hitler was strangled by a member of his inner circle and that Eva Braun escaped. Before reaching this conclusion, Thomas examines Hitler's personality and health. He believes that the dictator had Parkinson's disease and was a borderline schizophrenic. The author spends over 75 pages on the mysterious Bormann, arguing that he escaped to South America and is buried there. Those who enjoy reading about conspiracies, mixed with forensics and the flight of Nazi war criminals, will enjoy Thomas's reasoning processes. Yet Thomas makes a few mistakes. For example, he has Gen. William J. Donovan, head of the OSS, as William O'Donovan. Insane.

This book is pretty nuts. I hope it wasn't written by some evil white supremecist fellow. The title kind of popped out at me. I had a laugh. I don't know if it was intended to be a novelty book, but that's what it is for me. Still, this book is effective. You wonder about this bizarre conspiracy. I'm not sure if Hitler really did blow his head off anymore. Not that I really care, but it is kind of funny.

interesting concept..but..

I couldnt stomach too much of the rant about why the western allies failed to drive on berlin (its all the Americans fault). How about how Montgomery "saved" us during the battle of the bulge? If this is how he records history, how can there be any credibility to any other of his supposed findings?

Sheer idiocy!

The only people who would enjoy this book are those who are convinced that aliens have abucted them and hijacked them to other universes. This book is pure science fiction from start to finish and poorly written fiction. Let's get down to brass tacks:
The evidence that Hitler and Eva Braun died in the Berlin bunker at 3:30 in the afternoon on April 30, 1945 is irrefutible. Both commited suicide. There are multiple eyewitnesses who saw the corpses and who survived to tell the story, either in Russian captivity, on American TV or to dozens of different historians over the years. All saw Eva Braun dead and saw her incinerated in the garden of the Chancellery.
Only the most perverted and uneducated mind could possibly believe for a single milesecond that Eva Braun escaped from the Bunker. Aside from the fact that almost no one escaped alive and got into the American sector at this impossibly late date, what would Eva's motive have been? Hmmm?? She risked her life by traveling to Berlin to die at Hitler's side. He rewarded her loyalty by marrying her the day before their joint suicide. According to the author, Eva then (inexplicably) deserts Hitler and successfully escapes from the Bunker?
Never mind that this is a physical and emotional impossibility for her. Forget that there are no eyewitnesses, either in the Bunker or anyone who saw her alive after 4-30-45. Let's sweep under the carpet that Eva, a devoted family person, never bothered to visit or see her parents again, or her two sisters, Gretl or Ilse.
This book is insulting in its premise, torpid in style and ridiculous in all areas. Avoid it like the plague, it's pure fantasy.

Unbiased history of the airline and man you love to hate!

This is an excellent, well written, well edited brief history of Ryanair, and by default, Michael O'Leary. Creaton does not pull any punches when describing O'Leary's methods for dealing with conflict, but she does not take sides. Love him or hate him, O'Leary took a near-bankrupt airline and turned it into a legimate world-class carrier.

Creaton also spends a great deal of time explaining the role of Tony Ryan, and how O'Leary intially advised the Ryan's to close the airline, and only at Tony's incessant goading did O'Leary agree to take on the task of making the airline successful. Tony Ryan is as much a part of the airline as O'Leary, although much more low key.

Michael O'Leary is a lot of things...and he would be the first to admit it. When accussed of being Tony Ryan's bagman, O'Leary replied, "I've always been Tony Ryan's bagman!"

Creaton clearly conducted extensive interviews and an enormous amount of research to write this book, and it shows. Give it a read!

Great book series for young readers

My son LOVES all of the Ricky Ricotta Mighty Robot books. He pre-ordered this one with his allowance. As always, he can't put it down. He usually finishes the book on the first day, and this one was no different. Re-reading all week long. Love that there is a book sereies that holds his interest for so long!

The story is silly and immature but that's what kids love. My son has rad the entire series already

Our 4 yo really loves reading this series and has read it several times and even brought it to school to share and trade with class mates. Any book that makes our kids read on their own is worth the price of admission. The story is silly and immature but that's what kids love. My son has rad the entire series already.

Horrible binding

It was hard to rate this entire series because as a story, my students would rate it as a '5-star' but the binding is rotten, '1-star' at best. The books all fell apart within a week. I teach 1-2 multiage so my learners are 6-7 years old and know how to properly handle books. Unfortunately the pages would fall out while reading. Grr.

HOPE THERE IS MORE

When I read LGBT about the first book which was free. I will admit I was a little apprehensive. Just because I am not a fan of graphic sex of any kind. I will stop reading and and discard the book.But the heart felt moments we're handled with grace and enabled you to see the moment of love for what it was. Now on to the rest. I loved the stories. Magic , dragons ,action. I literally had to keep reading and will honestly say I NEVER BUY BOOKS. When there are so many free books. But congratulations, excellent story telling. I bought the next 2 books and they are kept in favourites to read again. I hope there will be more books in the future.

I wish some of these authors would write one big book instead of having to wait around for the next "installment" of the story...I've always loved reading and honestly don't remember so many authors writing several books to get through what really should be one...I know Harry Potter was a big thing, but not every story is meant to go on and at least her books were full length novels rather than just barely one....I've been doing a lot of reading these days because I have extra time on my hands, so I guess this must be the new trend in writing....I'm eagerly and impatiently waiting for the next piece of these story...

Very good read

This is the third book in the series, i have really enjoyed reading them. The way the characters end up with their loved ones is unusual. A lot of them are gay, i like the way the author was not intimidated to pair them up this way. Of course not all of them are gay, but enough to let you know the author knew what he was writing about. I myself am not gay but have friends and loved ones who are, its nice to see the author felt that all types of people exist and that just added to the story line. I will be looking for more from this author. I recommend this series to anyone who likes dragons and magic.

About the Author
Gavin Ambrose achieved his Masters in Communications at Central St. Martins and is a tutor on both the Typographic and Information Design courses at the London College of Printing. He has written and designed several books on branding and packaging. Paul Harris studied at the London College of Printing and has gone on to become a freelance writer and editor. His work has appeared extensively in magazines and journals on both sides of the Atlantic, including style bible Dazed & Confused.

If you're a beginner in the Design world, this books gives you the basics needed to start from zero. It gives a serious introduction to the design process and adds many examples of each step.
