Instead of treating the phenomena traditionally associated with psychedelic drugs, yoga, or hypnosis as undifferentiated conglomerates, an attempt will be made to set apart and treat separately each of the many phenomena associated with each of these areas of inquiry.

This book does not set out to simply demonstrate the importance of psychedelics, yoga, and hypnosis, or to present substantive material pertaining to these topics. It also treats each topic as continuous with other known psychological phenomena and as an important piece to the puzzle of social psychology. It differs from most previous treatises in that it does not assume that psychedelics, yoga, and hypnosis can bring out unused mental or physical capacities in man, heighten awareness or give rise to enhanced creativity, or produce altered states of consciousness, suspension of conventional reality-orientation, changes in body-image, or changes in perception.

Interesting!

I got GOODBYE DIABETES because the author and writer are family members of a good friend of mine. I wasn't looking for a book on diabetes, but this book is well written and very interesting! I have seen diabetes reversed twice and know that it can be done. Everyone should read this book because diabetes is the cause of a host of other health problems. If you need recipes or cookbook suggestions I can suggest some that are in line with the principles of this book. Excellent book!

Incredible!

This book and its author must have been inspired by God. What I learned in this book I hadn't learned in the ten years of being diagnosed with diabetes. Long story short, my diabetes reading went from 320 (I tested this morning) to 128, five days after reading this book! Thank God!! I've been more energized, active, and feeling so much better. If you do as told in the book I truly believe your diabetes can be reversed as it says. I couldn't put the book down.

Goodbye Diabetes is a MUST for every Diabetic--AND the rest of us Too!

Every diabetic needs to read this book from cover to cover! If you are not diabetic, you may have prediabetes--and not know it (as of 2006 40% in U.S. over 20 had diabetes or prediabetes and 75% of those 75 or older!), you need to read this book. If you are not prediabetic and live the American lifestyle--you also need to read this book, because you are most likely on your way to becoming a prediabetic. This book is "cutting edge" to say the least and includes much information you have never heard before about diabetes, how to measure your body's response to carbohydrate intake, and how to use "lifestyle medicine" to prevent and reverse diabetes. Dr. Youngberg is so comprehensive in this book, I was astounded. If you like a scientific approach (there must be over 500 study references in the Endnotes) presented in an easy to understand manner, this book is for you. Lots of practical case studies are given from his clinic in California.

The book is beautiful, high quality, well written and edited, and I will be gifting it to family and friends. I recommend it highly!

"The Art of Selling Yourself" is a book written by Adam Riccoboni and Daniel Callaghan of MBA & Company. It was originally published in the United Kingdom under the title "Buy Me!" in 2011. The content of the book is, as you might tell, about how to sell yourself in business situations such as interviews, ideas and public relations and how to sell yourself if you are an entrepreneur and needing to sell your concept to potential markets.

Riccoboni & Callaghan outline ten steps to take to sell yourself and the book contains exercises to complete to help you focus on your qualities and unique selling points. It takes you step by step from there to show you how to present yourself in a way that people want to buy you (your services, idea, or work with your company).

While some of this book is not ground breaking or new to this genre I did enjoy it quite a bit. I think everyone will get many takeaways and the book will help you develop confidence, show you how to network, show you how to have a conversation with someone in a way that you can better relate, get out of your comfort zone, and get up from setbacks and move on to the next sell. I also like the step by step format which makes this an easy read and helps you work on one concept at a time.

One of the most interesting parts for me are the case studies. Profiles of Sir Richard Branson, Oprah Winfrey, and Jeff Bezos were my favorites out of the the ten included in the book. You have an opportunity to see, in a few pages, how these business masters started out and see where they have come today.

I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to sell themselves in any area of their life but especially in business. From selling yourself to a potential employer to selling your project to an investor this book will show you how to begin and that is with yourself. I will have this on by bookshelf as a resource to continue to look back on.

Very simple but thorough process of presenting yourself

It isnt about selling or marketing, it is about who you are and how you influence others. It isnt only quid pro quo or exploiting weakness. It is about being well prepared in many different ways, emphathizing, going the extra mile, and many other concepts described in the book. I was introduced to the Minto Pyramid in this book. Sometimes, we have to resort to other techniques. But the book helped me with several insights that gives me a path to be my best at influencing by developing me.

Excellent overview

'Six Estonian poets,' a selection of poetry from Arc’s 'New voices from Europe and beyond,' is a must-have for English speakers with an interest, academic or personal, in Estonian literature and language. Parallel texts (an excellent tool for learning any foreign language) are extremely rare in the case of Estonian-English translation and the book is to be welcomed on these grounds alone. This authoritative collection is edited by Doris Kareva, herself a major poet and translator and the literature editor for 'Looming' ('Creation'), a leading cultural journal. Kareva presents a selection of poets (often the winners of national poetry competitions) active through the 1970’s to the present. All the major styles of contemporary Estonian poetry are represented - from the deeply influential, quirky, eclectic work of cosmopolitan performance artist Juhan Viiding (active during the 1970s and 1980s) to the highly localized dialect poetry in V�ro kiil (the local language of South East Estonia) by Kauksi �lle with various manifestations of modernism and post modernism in between. The emotions and opinions expressed embrace a range of styles and political and social views that reflect the diversity and sophistication of modern Estonia. A team of seven translators gives the Estonian speaker an opportunity to contrast and compare the vocabulary and techniques used to render this notoriously difficult language into English. Ideally this book should be bought in tandem with editor Kareva’s 'Shape of time' (2010), also available from Arc in parallel text form (translation by Tiina Aleman) in order to gain a holistic picture of contemporary Estonian poetry.

A punchline for a title, and the rest of the book delivers!

WOW. I don't usually write reviews, but felt compelled to for this book. This story is so honest, so real, so funny, and so heart wrenching that it demands a thank you. It's a hard book to read at some points, and a hard book to put down at all times. The writing is quick paced, vivid, and witty, sort of a "girlfriend's guide to addiction", a page turner that has you wondering whether you want to know what happens next at some points, as you root for the heroine.

This book is really two books in one: A fabulous summer beach book offering an authentic, funny, and insightful look into the world of addiction for those lucky enough not to be touched by it, and it's also a compassionate and accountable companion for anyone's journey on the path to sobriety. Thank you Lisa Smith for sharing your story!

From hopeless to healthy, this is what it takes...

For a female attorney who drank and used as copiously as Lisa Smith did, I'm surprised most anyone who had any contact with her in her firm wasn't well aware that she had an addiction problem. I practiced law for many years as an active alcoholic, basically of the binge drinking variety. So even though I only drank on weekends for the most part, I learned you get pegged pretty quickly. There's just too many ways for people to tell and for the firm's lawyers to figure it out, no matter how good you are at maintaining. A little mouthwash in the mornings isn't going to hide it.

So while I didn't believe Smith's version of how she was skating by undetected, I found her amazing somewhat repetitive drunkalogue both entertaining and scary, though shallow. Anyone with an alcohol or coke problem will find themselves here in full debilitating glory. The intense pressure we put on ourselves as active alcoholics is a crushing experience right up until we "stop digging."

The recovery portion of this memoir is the best part. The fact that she never relapsed after initially seeking in-patient treatment and her willingness to change and grow into a sober person is an enlightening guide to all those who want to know what it really takes to turn it all around. If you're having trouble grabbing hold of a program or path to sobriety, this just might be the book that helps you figure out what it takes.

Well written

When I finished this book (as an ebook), I was a shocked by how many I-was-an-addict-who-got-sober stories that were recommended to me (“If you liked this book, here are fifty similar books you might like . . .) I like these stories of successful people who lost everything and then claw their way back up to success. In Lisa Smith’s story, she almost lost everything but caught herself before that happened, which is amazing considering that she says she didn’t go a day without drinking for ten years. The drinking eventually morphed into barely making it to eleven a.m. to an early lunch where she could order drinks, to starting to drink in the mornings and using coke to keep her going. How she kept her high-powered job while doing this and how she didn’t land in the hospital until the day she checked herself into detox is also stunning.

My favorite of this genre of nonfiction will always be Augusten Burroughs’ Dry because I laughed out loud and cried my guts out all through that one. I didn’t laugh or cry once during A Girl Walks into A Bar, but there are words of wisdom on living life sober. This book also didn’t have the harrowing aspects of a book like The Night of the Gun by David Carr because she wasn’t wandering into crack dens in the middle of the night. Instead, as a New Yorker, she just had boxes of wine delivered and would call her coke dealer as if she were ordering a pizza.

This is a well-written book for the genre, but it doesn’t break any new ground.

Sometimes It's Good to be Scared

Great book, but somewhat terrifying, especially if you actually venture into the back country like I do. Be it ski mountaineering, or hunting horseback, so much can go wrong out there. I suggest you buy a personal rescue beacon (or maybe study emergency medicine at an accredited school) before adding this to your library. Seriously though, books like these are invaluable.

For example, did you know that the greatest source of evidence in a murder case is extracted from the victim’s body? Forensic science will use an autopsy to determine the time of death; the victim’s last meal; the manner of death; the weapon used; maybe even the actual weapon itself. Marks on the body will assist the pathologist in this regard. All of this information, pieced together, will bring them closer to catching the culprit. But there are ways to avoid this.
There are ways of killing a person without leaving any marks on the body. There are ways to avoid leaving your DNA at the crime scene. There are ways to dispose of the body so that it will never be recovered, at least not in your lifetime.
Even as you read this book, someone, somewhere is committing the perfect murder. They will never be caught and forensic science, although it has greatly enhanced detection rates, is not yet fool proof. About the Author
David Elio Malocco was born in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. His father was born in Casalattico in Frosinone in Italy and his mother was born in Monaghan in Ireland. He was educated at the Christian Brothers School in Dundalk and his parents later sent him to St. Patrick’s College in Cavan where they hoped he would be ordained as a Roman Catholic priest. But he chose law and business instead. He received his Bachelor of Civil Law degree from University College Dublin and spent fifteen years as a criminal lawyer before taking a second degree at the Open University, Milton Keynes in England where he obtained a first class honors degree in Psychology majoring in Cognitive Development. In 1991 he realized a personal ambition and moved to New York where he studied film direction, production and writing for film at New York University. Since then he has written numerous screenplays in several genre and has written, produced and directed several shorts and three feature films, Virgin Cowboys, Magdalen and Jack Gambel: The Enigma. He later studied creative writing at Oxford University. He has written several books on true crime and forensic science. The books were motivated by dual diplomas he had taken. The first was in the Psychology of Criminal Profiling and the second in Forensic Science specializing in crime scene analysis. Packed with fascinating info and well written

As a mystery writer, I really loved this book. Tons of great info on crime scene protocol, forensics, police procedure, even how the police are trained to get confessions! Useful for me so that my readers don't go: "That never happens in real life," the kiss of death for a mystery.

And if you read this book, you'll also realize that committing the perfect murder is very, very difficult thing to do. Thank heavens!

A real treat

This is a very informative book about forensic science and crime scene analysis with an excellent chapter on the law relating to Miranda and Search rights. Very well written and easy to understand. Best suited to anyone who likes crime programs like CSI, Dexter and Criminal Minds. I thought it was very good and well worth buying.

Kosha Anja Joubert is an international facilitator, trainer, manager and consultant. She is currently working on the translation of her book, previously published in German: The Change Makers Guide to Collective Wisdom; Leila Dregger is a graduate agricultural engineer and long-time journalist. This is a great book...it is a nice addition to the play kitchen-restaurant theme. It has some really neat vocabulary words that my daycare enjoyed and have used while playing. The real pictures are wonderful as well as the different types of chefs and kitchens.

Not that Great.

I was slightly disappointed in the low level of detail and the VERY basic images in this book. The writing itself is of low quality, and it really didn't fill my expectations. If you're really interested in making historical costumes, I'd suggest looking around for something with a bit more description.

Usable and enjoyable

I volunteer at a park and museum which is involved in the War of 1812 and wanted as much information on making costumes of the period1790-1810 for both sexes and children. I've relied on some pattern makers but wanted to try something on my own. It was only helpful in giving me a broad view of several periods and patterns that I could reproduce but I was looking for details of accessories and trim on the dresses and menswear. I is usable by costumers who are more experienced than I am. I enjoyed reading about the evolutions of costume styles and how personal tastes really shaped some clothing.
