About the Author
Architect�Mark Gorgolewski�is a professor in the Department of Architectural Science at Ryerson University in Toronto. He is a board member of the Canada Green Building Council and Chair of the Association for Environment Conscious Building in the UK.�

June Komisar,�an architect and an associate professor in the Department of Architectural Science at Ryerson University, lectures and publishes widely on the topic of designing for urban agriculture and is a member of the Toronto Food Policy Council.

Joe Nasr�is an independent scholar, lecturer, and consultant who teaches courses on urban food security and urban agriculture. His 1996 book Urban Agriculture: Food, Jobs, and Sustainable Cities was acknowledged as the standard text on the topic.

an exciting perspective on urban ag

I think the most exciting stuff going on with urban ag these days is the effort to cross boundaries into urban planning and design, green infrastructure and the like. We can combine forces between urban food production and sustainable urban design and beautification at the same time. This is one of the first works to get this and stimulate thinking about this new approach, which came to life at an Urban Agriculture Summit in Toronto in August of 2012(see the Summit blog for a "mannapesto" on this theme). Great artwork and well-done text make for a pleasant and uplifting read --wayne roberts

Don't think I was ever this excited to own a book related to urban agriculture. Beautiful and well-formated book. Great great resource for research projects/getting you started in coming up with your own ideas on viable food production

Fabulous book. Not filled with cheap analysis just to get a book published. If you like the Lopez and you don't want to study for it until your hair turns white, read this. It is quiet, dry, but spectacular. And it is all correct to boot!

Lightning from a Blue Sky

Not only showing several systems for White's side, but also showing a fair number of excellent Black replies, Dangerous Weapons is just that. Dangerous. Carrying not just the moves themselves, but also the reasoning behind said moves, showing several tangents as well. It is such a wonderful book, I doubt it will ever see a shelf again. I leave it out next to my Chess board and play through any of the five systems I am liking.

Unclear title and cheap printing quality

I bought this book because after I read the title and some example pages of the book, it demonstrated this is a White repertoire for Ruy Lopez players. Soon after I received the book on yesterday, I found out it's actually written for Black side of Ruy Lopez. Moreover, this book has a very harsh printing smell all over, and the printing paper are clearly cheap and darker than any of the Everyman chess book I've bought (so far I own over 40 Everyman books). I haven't have time to read the book in detail but the 2 points listed above are frustrated enough for a Everyman chess fan to leave this book 2 stars.

comprehensive WWII saga

It’s almost impossible for those of us not yet in our nineties to imagine what living through World War II was like—so Marge Piercy did it for us in “Gone to Soldiers,” a vast saga about the ground-level experiences of a small group of men and women who did what they had to do, and more. Sentence by sentence, theater by theater, through 750 pages, Piercy masterfully immerses us in the horror and heroism of 1939-1945. The scene shifts from Detroit to Toulouse to Washington to London to Guadalcanal as her characters are blown by what Herman Wouk called “The Winds of War”—the only WWII book I’ve read with comparable scope and storytelling skill. One character is a woman journalist who shifts from writing happy magazine fiction to covering the battle for Paris in 1944. Another is an artist and drifter whose knowledge of French lands him behind enemy lines working with the French Resistance. There he meets a Jewish woman explosives expert whose experiences would be unbelievable if Piercy hadn’t based the character on real Resistance fighters. This woman’s teenage sister had fortuitously been sent to America, where she winds up, unhappily, in Detroit. In that household is a woman struggling to help support the others while going to college and enduring the endemic sexism of the era. Her fianc�, meanwhile, is island-hopping in the Pacific with the Marines, surviving many a gruesome snafu. Overhead stateside, a woman pilot is ferrying warplanes from factory to seaports on both coasts for shipment to battle areas, reveling in the personal and vocational freedom of wartime. Vivid subsidiary characters abound, such as the domineering bisexual OSS operative, the serial molester, the codebreaker whose intercepts help shorten the war, the housewife who somehow keeps her family together. At times, the storylines seem a little soapy, but the realism level remains high. If Piercy over-emphasizes the contribution of women and gays, it’s only to redress the balance of a thousand combat-based accounts. I took this heavy book on the plane from Los Angeles to London and back, and it engrossed me nearly all the way home.

a book worth your time!!

Marge Piercy wrote this book years ago and I read it then and the characters have always stayed with me. That's pretty unusual because I read a lot of books and usually we're friends for days or weeks but not years. I had been checking to see if and when it came out on Kindle and by accident got it the first day it was published. This is an exceptionally fine book -- extremely well written, very well developed characters and unusual people -- but regular people all the same caught up in WWII. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is so worth the time (it's a long book). Marge Piercy is a poet and her use of language shows that. I think women might especially like it because it's not just description but the characters' feelings and thoughts are well explored. I remember that she researched this book for 7 or longer years and that research shows in the details of life. Please give it a chance. You will be well rewarded.

Must read.

Beautifully written and well-researched. The structure of the novel was unusual: it followed the war-time experiences of ten people, a resistance fighter in France, a code-breaker in Washington DC, a young French girl sent to live with relatives in the US, a woman pilot, a merchant marine, a GI in the Phillipines, an American drifter-artist, a New York writer/divorc�e, a young woman struggling to become a social worker,and an American woman in the London blitz. A few of their stories are connected or intersect, and each chapter is devoted to one character's experience. I couldn't put it down - though many of the events were horrific to read about, it's our shared history. I highly recommend this book.

My background in developing statistical market timing systems for the hedge fund industry gave me unusual insights into what makes a stable, sustainable model versus designs that carry excessive risk of failure.

I originally developed the concepts that ultimately became this book for my own use. But as a financial coach, I realized all my clients needed what was in here.

I wrote the first draft of this book as a private distribution document to help my clients. But people began passing it around, others began asking to buy it.

Useful explanation about retirement income

In what looks to be the 5th book in his series, Todd Tresidder has provided a fine explanation about how to prepare one's finances for retirement.

I've recently written about how there are two schools of thought about retirement income. One is a probability-based approach which looks at what would have worked historically. This has been developed by the financial planning profession. This is where the 4% rule comes from. Todd calls it "conventional retirement planning," and he spends the first half of the book explaining all of the problems with it. I agree wholeheartedly with his various conclusions here, such as that there is no such thing as "The Number" needed for retirement, and that too many investigators rely too heavily on the historical record for building their conclusions. Especially when market valuation levels are particularly high and/or interest rates are particular low (today's situation), historical averages are going to present an overly rosy picture about what is going to work.

He provides lots of sensible advice. He gets you to focus on the key modeling assumptions which will provide the main impact on the results. One alternative model he describes is to build a floor of guaranteed income sources to cover basic expenses, and then invest more aggressively for the things which may be "nice to have." This is the essential recommendation coming out of the other retirement income school of thought which I call "safety first." He also reminds that you should be using your entire balance sheet of assets rather than just your financial assets when thinking about retirement income. It's another key component of the "safety-first" school.

The book is short, to the point, and provides a good overview of what consumers should be thinking about so as to not blindly accept the built-in assumptions of retirement calculators they may come across on the web.

Magic Retirement?

Having followed Mr. Tressider for a couple years now I was intrigued how he would expand his "Ultimate Retirement Calculator" into a treatise on retirement scenarios. Like others who've reviewed this e-book, I have been researching my own retirement using scenarios found on smartmoney.com to Money Magazine to AAII. Other authors such as Daniel R Solin "The Smartest Investment Book You'll Ever Read" and Bill Schultheis "The New Coffeehouse Investor" have simple portfolio building techniques but nothing quite as in depth for retirement nest egg as Mr. Tressider has done here.
I plan on rereading and recalculating [and saving] until I'm comfortable.

I retired at 45 by doing essentially what this author describes in his cash-flow model (although I wish I'd had the benefit of having this book beforehand to lay out the method so eloquently before I did it on my own -- it would have saved some stress). This book will be a great guide to anybody who's brave enough to take the plunge & step off the 9-5 treadmill early. Good luck!

The most daring, inventive, engrossing and wonderful fantasy novel it has ever been my pleasure to read

For those of you not interested in reading a novel before you read a novel, I suggest you skip to the last paragraph for the Cliffs Notes version of my review. For those of you who wish to know how it's possible that one book can forever change the lens through which you view the genre of fantasy and the metric and standard through which you measure it, read on.

Seldom do I ever feel compelled to write a review. In fact, this is (I believe) my first review on Goodreads. But every so often in life, you have the fortune to come across a work so artfully, skillfully and carefully crafted that it can only have been created by someone who has found what they were born to do as an artist. That is precisely what I found in Jonathan Renshaw's "Dawn of Wonder," and never before have I been so grateful for deciding to give a name I hadn't heard before a chance.

From start to finish, the story's slow-burn development builds a perfect level of mysticism behind the all too real moments. Make no mistake, this is NOT high fantasy and it would be an unfair mischaracterization to relegate it to the category of epic fantasy. For a world where impossible things can and do happen, this is absolutely as real as it gets.

Renshaw explores some of the most difficult subjects I've ever seen an author attempt to address in the fantasy genre. Childhood trauma manifesting in present-day paralyzing fear, a broken home, domestic violence, loss of innocence, and loss of loved ones are just of some of the adversities faced by young Aedan in this novel. This is not, however, your typical coming-of-age story arc. It is instead a daring exploration of the child psyche, somehow, often remarkably, capturing precisely the thoughts and sentiments of a boy of Aedan's age. Were a boy gifted Renshaw's incredible ability to convey emotion and thought, I imagine the result would be strikingly similar to the almost impossibly accurate articulations found in "Dawn of Wonder." I imagine that this novel could only have been written by someone that either personally experienced childhood trauma or has intimate familiarity with someone who has. If this is indeed the case, Renshaw's attempt to convey the reality of those traumatic instances should be lauded for shining such a light in to a genre often defined by the superfluous and superficial, and he has my sympathy for what he experienced.

Lest anyone balk at the prospect of facing such realism in a genre many of us seek for the very purpose of escaping our daily reality-laden drudgery, I implore you for a moment to remember what it was to be child. Just as our fears were made exponentially more terrifying and just as our losses and failures were so keenly exacerbated by our lack of maturity, so too were our feelings of triumph, simple joy and wonder made boundless and larger than life by the creativity and impossible (yet no less real in our thoughts) beliefs we allowed our minds to indulge in.

In this sense, the title "Dawn of Wonder" could not have been more aptly chosen. The experiences we're privileged to witness through the lens of Aedan's young mind allow our own minds to harken back to those days where it was possible to find a pirate's treasure in your own backyard, and when our worlds were so black and white that we believed our feelings on certain subjects would forever be set in stone. But just as we stood by and watched that black and white blend in to an amorphous gray in our lives, so too do we witness how the forges that are maturity and knowledge temper and challenge everything Aedan once believed defined him.

Despite this lengthy (and frankly somewhat pretentious) review, I have only addressed the skill and care through which the story is told and not the story itself. With regard to the plot, once again, the title "Dawn of Wonder" is an apt description of the developments over the course of the novel. Aedan's own maturation, and consequently the loss of his idealism and the birth of his realism, stands in stark juxtaposition to the mysterious and wonderful elements building behind the scenes.

It is these very elements that permit the book to be characterized as fantasy, but this is not a farm boy leaving home to fulfill an impossibly important destiny through the use of magic blades and dragons. Instead, the careful manner in which Renshaw applies the elements of myth and mysticism to the world he created is akin to a master painter's sparing choice of color or a master chef's discerning measure of just the right amount of spice. As a person who self-identifies as a member of "The More Swords, Magic and Dragons The Better" club, rest assured that the story progressively and selectively incorporates more fantasy as it develops. I promise that those of you seeking to scratch their fantasy itch will find themselves satisfied and practically begging for more by the end of the novel.

As my unfortunate friends have now become aware, I could go on forever about this book. The dialogue is so witty and richly rewarding that at times I found myself jealous, as though it were unfair that other humans were capable of this level of verbal mastery. But these petty sentiments only led me to respect the nearly flawless and never lazy way in which Renshaw crafted a mind, a world and a story in perfect synchronicity. The story is exciting, satisfying, poignant, fun, touching, whimsical, mystical, and all too often capable of tugging on your heartstrings. I'd be lying if I said I didn't shed a tear in both laughter and sadness at varying points throughout this novel.

The wonderful world and colorful characters that inhabit "Dawn of Wonder", and Aedan's interactions with both, challenge the notions of what it means to be family and what it means to find love and friendship. You'll find yourself remembering those times that just the very presence of your friends made you feel as though you could tackle anything life could throw your way. And even in those moments where you didn't and couldn't believe, they did the believing for you. They picked you up and carried you through adversity, and you found yourselves made closer by the experience. The impact of the bonds formed among our peers that are built through childhood friendship, support, squabble and mutual maturation on the type of man or woman we ultimately become cannot be understated.

Long story short, five stars out of five, ten points out of ten, whatever you want to call it. I doubt I will find a more compelling and poignant mixture of storytelling and character development in my reading adventures, and in that sense by the end of "Dawn of Wonder" I found myself saddened, when I would ordinarily be excited, at the prospect of searching for another book to read. It is cliché to say I wished it would never end, but when an author achieves an impossible standard, sometimes clichés are all we have. After all, as the above review will show, there are both too many and not enough words for how much I enjoyed this novel. Lovers of the fantasy genre, I cannot recommend this book any more. Anyone interested in a daring exploration in to the themes of family dynamics, child psyche and loss of innocence, I say the same to you. And anyone just looking for a terrific story and an engrossing read, well, you know the drill. Just read it.

AMAZING (Because caps makes it true)

This book is amazing. In order to get the most from this review, you need a base of what kinds of books I enjoy. I love Brandon Sanderson (The Stormlight Archive is my favorite series currently), The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, and The Gentleman Bastards by Scott Lynch to name a few.

Now on to why you are here. This book has many elements that I have been looking for. Too many fantasy authors attribute an all powerful character to an interesting one. Within 50 pages, the author has the character besting 5 other trained individuals and by the end of the series, they might as well be facing the army by themselves. Another problem is creating intensity. How do you have down time when an army is invading your land or something troubling is happening? It is hard on the reader to stay in a consistent stressful time. More for the sake that we start rolling our eyes and say "Of COURSE that would happen now".

This book does not have those issues. The reader ages with the main character. The initial thoughts from the character are a mixture of immature and insightful. This is the delicate balance of writing a 13 year old character. You have to write them including things that they would do at that age, yet still be interesting and believable. This book stays true to it's character as he ages. He has flaws and moments in the book where you laugh and cringe for him. For all those interested, the female characters in this book are well-written as well. They aren't in need of saving and aren't a guy in a woman's body.

In short, this book has as realistic characters as a fantasy book can come with page turning intensity mixed with laugh out loud moments. I believe the author said it took 10 years to write this book (with a job on the side) and you can tell he put it to good use. I am so excited for the next 3 in the series.

Good for all readers, awesome new coming-of-age fantasy

I was amazed by this new fantasy coming-of-age novel, which exceeded all of my expectations. The book is HUGE, but I read the whole thing almost non-stop in two days, constantly intrigued by the mysteries of the created world and life of the main character and supporting characters. The story is told entirely from the main character's point of view, which I really enjoyed, as the constantly switching perspectives of most new fantasy works often annoy me. Although the main character is a young teenager for the whole story, his occasionally childish perspective makes me think of that age more with nostalgia than annoyance at the MC's immaturity (which usually happens in books with young MCs). All of the characters are realistic in their actions and motivations, and, although there is typically a clear line between the good guys and bad guys, no character is perfect and struggles with various faults and temptations. The book even addresses on more serious topics such as abuse, cultural intolerance, and religion, though never in a way that feels preachy or overdone (more in the way of addressing serious topics that are real and need to be addressed in the life of the main character). The main character (though young) has enough faults to be relatable but enough strengths to be admired and someone I would like to be (an important and difficult balance that many books have a difficult time maintaining). Additionally, you get a TON of reading material for a cheap price, with no discernible editing errors (very unexpected and amazing in an indie author). Also, despite handling some heavy topics, this book has content suitable for all ages of readers (no cursing, sex scenes, or gratuitous violence), although the writing style is in no way simplistic or dumbed-down for younger readers. When thinking of what the target audience of this book probably is, I realize that I can't imagine an age past 10 that I would not immensely enjoy this novel.

The only possible faults with this book that I can come up with are that it follows a very overdone fantasy trope (a gifted young boy's coming-of-age in an academy) and that the next books in the series are not out yet. Despite following an overdone theme, this book brings me back to why that theme is so popular, and in my opinion is second only to (if not even with) Rothfus' Kingkiller Chronicles, one of my all time favorites. Even following standard rules of this genre, everything feels very realistic for youths of that age (I especially liked the way the young romances were handled). This is also very much the first book in a series, and there are many potential mysteries and avenues for development of characters and the created world that are hinted at in this book but left to future books to encounter more thoroughly.

All in all, I LOVED this book, more than any I've read in years, and can't wait for the next in the series. I will soon be recommending this to both friends and enemies: friends to share in the enjoyment of this first book, and enemies to share the suffering of waiting for book 2.

At the age of thirty-one, Gilbert moved with her husband to the suburbs of New York and began trying to get pregnant, only to realize that she wanted neither a child nor a husband. Three years later, after a protracted divorce, she embarked on a yearlong trip of recovery, with three main stops: Rome, for pleasure (mostly gustatory, with a special emphasis on gelato); an ashram outside of Mumbai, for spiritual searching; and Bali, for "balancing." These destinations are all on the beaten track, but Gilbert's exuberance and her self-deprecating humor enliven the proceedings: recalling the first time she attempted to speak directly to God, she says, "It was all I could do to stop myself from saying, 'I've always been a big fan of your work.'"

It's easy to envy Elizabeth Gilbert: she has had a run of successful, critically lauded books (National Book Award finalist for The Last American Man; Pushcart Prize winner for Pilgrims) and has sustained a successful career as a journalist for Spin and GQ. Her "trademark conversational" prose (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) is on display in her first memoir-cum-travelogue, yet not all reviewers are pleasantly engaged. They agree that the 108 chapters of the book (the same number of Buddhist prayer beads on a japa mala) are filled with interesting characters and vivid descriptions. But some critics feel Gilbert's likability and humor obscure the deeper themes of her search for enlightenment.

I loved this book

I loved this book. I had seen the movie, of course, but it left soooo much out. The book inspires me to take the gloves off in my own life and quit succumbing to others' wants, desires and expectations. This is my life. Its time to work on making me happy and fulfilled. I love travel and the next goal on my list is to begin doing a lot more as soon as possible. Every time I travel I feel free, independent, creative and strong. Who doesn't want more of that?

medical writing at its best

Dr Goldfrank has published previous editions of this book and they have been gigantic textbooks that will teach you while at the same time strengthen your arm and shoulder muscles from the sheer weight of them.

Here we now have a one thousand page paperback size book that is a delight to hold and read, especially since the contributors are excellent writers.

I'm not an MD but love learning medicine. This book will help you understand disease processes through the lens of toxic substances, their effect on the body, and their treatments.

I noticed the text discusses poisoning by Aluminum Phosphide (ALP), which can come in small wafers and, when set inside a grain storage container, will kill rodents, etc. Aluminum Phosphide is being used in India in epidemic proportions for suicides. At a website (jkscience.org) for Indian doctors I found a paper from doctors who, as you might expect, have a great deal of experience treating Aluminum Phosphide poisonings. One recommendation is to give 400 mg hydrocortisone IV every 4-6 hours to ALP victims which these doctors claims is essential for recovery considering the adrenal gland, which produces hydrocortisone, is often severely damaged in ALP poisoning. That is certainly the highest dose I've ever heard of, but it is hard to argue with the voice of experience. Goldfrank's doesn't mention using hydrocortisone in the treatment of ALP and maybe they should. Nor is treatment with magnesium sulfate mentioned in Goldfrank's Manual, which treatment is a mainstay of Indian doctors.
