David Hewson is a prolific and talented thriller writer with a large fanbase. A Thoughtful Approach to Nuts and Bolts

Hewson does a good job of laying out the nuts and bolts of novel writing in an easy conversational tone. The book is a bit long for the content, but it's a tough balancing act to give both instruction and context. Overall, the author keeps it interesting and provides an easy-to-understand description and fleshing out of what goes into a three-act structure.

Great examples provided.

Such a great book for aspiring writers. David Hewson has the experience and know how to make this book just fantastic reading. The many examples throughout really drove the points he was making home. From planning, to writing, to publishing there is just a lot of great stuff. I think this book definitely lives up to what it states it is. It is a user's manual for writing. I've read some books that claimed to be about writing but were really just motivational nonsense. There was no substance. This is not one of those books. This is the best money I've spent on a writing book to date, bar none.

Great suggestions - wish I'd read it sooner

I've intuitively known that I like certain authors more than others (for instance in the same genre). Now, after reading David Hewson's book, I understand why.
I'm a non-fiction writer, so it was fascinating to find out how a work of fiction is developed. Through a short scene called "Charlie and the Mermaid" we learn about the type of writer we might be, our genre, point of view, tense, dialogue, location, planning and actually writing!
Writing: A User Manual, is written by David Hewson whose works have been read by millions; some of these have been made into movies and also a TV series. So, his views on writing a successful novel are well worth listening to. I was particularly impressed with Hewson's ability to be self-disparaging about some of his novels and mistakes he has made. Plus the idea that his rules are for breaking - makes the book very credible.
Having reviewed over 100 books, I normally pr�cis and critique the book. For once, I'm digressing from my normal format - Why? Well, for any budding (or for that matter experienced) author, I'd be depriving the reader of the discovery of some great examples of how to successfully write a novel if I said too much. Suffice to say there's a surfeit of ideas and advice ranging from how to get started through keeping the project alive to delivering the finished manuscript, that you must read.
