Best Migraine Book!
By Ferrin Sanders
I, too, hesitated when I saw the price of The Migraine Revolution, but it is well worth the cost. This is, by far, the most comprehensive and helpful book about migraine that I have ever read! Although it costs more than most headache books, you also get more: it's 464 pages and is densely packed with very valuable information. It was published in Oct 2012 and is up to date with the latest scientific data. It's full of scientific references and contains many charts, grafts, and pictures, which clearly explain the science behind migraine and its treatments. It's not a light, fluffy book to breeze through, but it's written in a clear, pleasant (often amusing) style and I found it fascinating. It's an international book with an unfamiliar (to me) use of commas, due to its "British-inspired, anarchic" punctuation, but that was not a hindrance. The book features many beautiful old paintings which I enjoy, but I must say that I wasn't expecting to see several nude/semi-nude paintings of women. No, they are not erotic; they are lovely antique paintings, but I live in an Islamic nation which enforces modesty and I'm glad the book wasn't opened at Customs (might have been confiscated). I enjoy seeing charts and pictures in color, so I bought the medium-priced standard color paperback edition. The book is well made and is printed on good quality paper. There are 2 other editions available which I have not seen: monochrome (black & white) paperback and premium color hardcover. Before ordering, verify edition under to make sure you order the edition you want.

For some background on me, I followed the advice in Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program (published in 2002) by David Buchholz from 2004 until August 2013. My review of The Migraine Revolution contains some of the same comments as does my review of Heal Your Headache, so please excuse me if you notice some repetition. What I learned about food triggers in The Migraine Revolution is what caused me to stop the headache diet.

Throughout the years of following the 1-2-3 Program, I would on occasion go off the highly restrictive diet because it's not possible to live a normal life while on it, especially when traveling. But I did strictly follow the diet for months on end numerous times. Strictly following the diet meant eliminating the great majority of commonly eaten meals of a normal, healthy diet. It was equally as difficult to follow in the US as where I currently live in Abu Dhabi. Following the diet meant never being able to safely eat at restaurants, potluck dinners, or a friend's or relative's home. Doing this took a toll on my social life and resulted in isolation. It meant preparing dishes for my husband and other family members that I could not eat myself. (They shouldn't have to eat bland food just because I did.) It meant having to radically alter nearly every recipe found in normal cookbooks and magazines. It also meant inconveniencing kind people who attempted to accommodate my complicated diet, although I didn't ask them to. Dr. Buchholz greatly downplays the hardship involved in following his diet long-term. It was harmful to me for physical, psychological, and social reasons. Being obsessive about my diet was not good for me, especially since it wasn't even a healthy diet! I should have discontinued it after not promptly reaping clear and obvious benefits from it.

Shouldn't there be strong scientific evidence before promoting a diet this radical and restrictive? Dr. Buchholz doesn't think so. He says his beliefs are hypotheses based on the anecdotal experiences of his patients. Definition of anecdotal: "(of an account) not necessarily true or reliable, because based on personal accounts rather than facts or research. Based on hearsay." Buchholz even goes so far as to say that he would not participate in a scientific trial of his diet because: "No 'scientific' data to the contrary, from a randomized controlled trial or any other source, would ever convince me otherwise." As for myself, I'm ready for headache treatments based on scientific evidence rather than hearsay, which is why I'm grateful for The Migraine Revolution.

Brink says that avoiding so-called food triggers (other than MSG and aspartame) is nonsense because there is no scientific evidence whatsoever that these foods cause headaches. His reasoning was very convincing, so I went back to eating all those "trigger" foods, which I had avoided for years. Guess what happened? My headaches immediately decreased and I no longer had the severe, long-lasting ones! It's been over 2 months since I returned to eating a normal diet and I have felt better the entire time. Plus I can now safely eat away from home. I had constant headaches while avoiding the so-called trigger foods, but I kept trying anyway. Very illogical of me, so why would I do that? Well, so many reviewers said they had success and I was afraid my headaches would get even worse if I stopped. Foods with MGS and tyramine are so difficult to avoid that maybe I accidentally ate a trigger and therefore needed to be more careful next time. MSG is near-impossible to completely avoid since it's hidden in foods and can also be formed during processing, so it might be present without being on the food label. Knowing this lead me to waste a lot of time researching food ingredients and processing. As for tyramine, there is no way to know how much is in the food we eat. The tyramine content of foods varies according to the method of processing and it increases greatly with aging (long before it spoils), plus we don't know the age of the meat and produce from markets and restaurants.

Brink says that if someone gets a headache from a "trigger" food, the ill effect is not likely from the food itself. People can develop a sensitivity to a food purely from a fear response. I believe this is what happened to me (over and over again) while following the headache diet, although I wouldn't have believed it at the time. In other words, the fear of a headache after eating a forbidden food, actually caused a headache. I had even begun to suspect foods that weren't on the list, but that Buchholz said "might" be triggers for some, such as tomatoes, kiwifruits, and mushrooms. Therefore, the forbidden food list kept getting longer. I don't like to think that I'm that suggestible and reactive, but apparently I am--or was (hopefully I've learned my lesson). The general consensus is that stress is, by far, the biggest headache trigger. Brink says that "'trigger'-food avoidance is more harmful than helpful for the vast majority of migraineurs." It certainly was harmful for me, but we all have to decide for ourselves what does and doesn't work for us. Headache treatments based on anecdotal evidence and conformation bias may be helpful in the short-term due to a strong placebo effect, but benefits are usually paltry and short-lived. Scientific evidence obviously speeds up the process of figuring out which treatments are truly beneficial, which is why The Migraine Revolution is so helpful.

No food is completely like another in term of its nutrients, and there are likely many nutrients and phytochemicals yet to be discovered. Therefore substitution of so-called non-trigger foods for forbidden foods is inadequate. Supplements (which replace only a tiny fraction of the nutrients) cannot come close to making up for the nutritional shortfall. I will never know what the full consequences of that diet may yet be to my health. Yet this headache diet is being recommended by Buchholz for everyone with headaches. And he sees no problem for people to stay on it forever, as long as they take a high-potency multivitamin daily. I feel like a fool for having deprived myself of a multitude of good foods for so long--all citrus, all nuts, avocados, bananas, red plums, raspberries, most cheeses, most beans, and on and on. My husband and our sons told me that the diet was unhealthy and counterproductive, but I didn't listen. I thought I should instead get headache advice from the best-selling headache book. Live and learn, but I sure wish I had learned sooner.

Thanks to Martin Brink, I am now free of food-trigger worries and can eat anything I want without fear of increasing headaches. With the wider variety of healthy foods to choose from, I now eat less junk food. I still suspect that MSG is unhealthy and if I have a better choice which isn't too inconvenient, I eat something else. But if I eat soup at a restaurant, I benefit from the vegetables in it, without the worry that there's probably MSG in it (I doubt they make their own broth). I don't seem to react to MSG, but if I did, then I'd make the effort to avoid it.

My headache problem isn't completely gone, but I'm grateful that it has significantly improved since stopping the trigger diet. I learned of a number of effective treatments from The Migraine Revolution, with neurotherapy said to be the most effective treatment for migraine, according to scientific studies. I haven't tried neurofeedback, but will consider it in the future after I move back to the States, if I feel the need then. Best wishes for good health to everyone!

THE definitive book on the subject
By C Harrison
I ordered The Migraine Revolution from Amazon UK, but I think that fellow migraine suffers world wide should be made aware of this outstanding book: It is a must-read and worth every penny.
I've tried many therapies, read many, many books and been down the medical route to try and find out why I suffer with migraines. Without a doubt this book has provided a real insight as to what is potentially the root cause where every other book/therapy /doctor etc. has failed. It is extremely well researched, debunks many myths and certainly gave me many 'eureka' moments. It is the most thorough book I have come across and discusses all the usual 'triggers' which sufferers often think are the cause. The way the brain functions is really the key and this is explained clearly, with the use of helpful analogies and diagrams throughout. Almost every conceivable therapy, so-called 'cure' and the medical approach are discussed in detail as well. There is a lot of information so start using a highlight pen as soon as you start to read it although the author has provided a complete summary of options and therapies towards the end of the book. Read it from the beginning, cover to cover to get the full benefit as it gradually builds the case for 'ending the tyranny'. The sense of humour throughout is a bonus.
I have been able to select some tools to work with (amongst them, practicing deep breathing) and I am researching neurotherapy which I hadn't come across before. This book has given me real hope after 25 years of medication, suffering and money down the drain on other books and therapies that only skim the surface.

Must Read for Migraine Sufferers
By Danielle D.
As a child and teen I was plagued with migraines. As I grew up and was able to make my own lifestyle choices, those migraines vanished slowly over the years. But I always wondered, why? Spending more time than I care to remember at a doctors office, no one could offer me relief. Medication after medication was all I was given, many with dangerous side effects. I remember being told when I was 15, after prescribing me a new medication how important it was to take it everyday. That I must not miss a dose, it could be life threatening. I never took a pill.

I'm thirty now, and I haven't had a migraine in over 5 years. My husband though has been having headaches for several years now, and they have turned into migraines over the last year. Combined with other health issues, we needed to understand exactly what was going on. From my experience as a child, I don't trust doctors and wanted to find a better way to help him. I know from experience what he's dealing with and know that there must be something to help.

I am so happy to have found "The Migraine Revolution." This is not your typical guide to help you eliminate a few migraine triggers. This is a very comprehensive look at the latest science dealing with migraines. I was amazed at all I learned. Ten years ago, my doctors couldn't have told me a 1/4 of this information.

This is not a short read, and the author discourages light reading and skimming. It is vitally important to read the entire book, skim later to refresh your memory. Each chapter builds on one another and if you are serious about ending your migraines, read and learn. This book will teach you everything you never knew you needed to know. From misconceptions, to triggers, to relief. This book is not a simple one size fits all plan. "The Migraine Revolution" is intended to help you understand what is happening in your body and finding a plan to treat it. Not everyone will need the same treatment plan.

This is one of the few medical books that I have read that left me feeling enlightened and not just left with more questions. "The Migraine Revolution" is written for the layman and isn't full of incomprehensible doctor speak. A very pleasant, enjoyable read.

I have hope now. My husband won't have to live in agony. We have learned so much and look forward to finally eliminating his migraines once and for all.
