About the Author

Edward T. Howley, PhD, FACSM, FNAK, earned his bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College and his master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He then completed a one-year postdoctoral appointment at Penn State University and was hired in 1970 as a faculty member at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Howley taught a variety of courses, including an undergraduate course in fitness testing and prescription and undergraduate and graduate courses in exercise physiology. He retired in 2007 and holds the rank of professor emeritus.

In addition to the previous editions of this book, Dr. Howley has authored three books, four book chapters, and 61 research articles dealing with exercise physiology, fitness testing, and prescription. He is a fellow in the National Academy of Kinesiology and served as chair of the Science Board of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in 2006-2007. In 2007-08 he served on the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee that evaluated the science related to physical activity and health and generated a report for use by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to write the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

Most of Dr. Howley’s volunteer efforts have been with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He was involved in the development of certification programs and served as president in 2002-03. He served as editor in chief of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal for seven years and as chair of the program planning committee for the annual ACSM Health and Fitness Summit meeting. In 2007, Howley was recognized for his professional contributions with the ACSM Citation Award. In his leisure time, he likes to golf, ride his bike, travel, and play with his grandchildren.

Dixie L. Thompson, PhD, FACSM, FNAK, is a professor and head of the department of kinesiology, recreation, and sport studies at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She is also the director of the Center for Physical Activity and Health at the university. She graduated from the 2008 class of the Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Bryn Mawr Summer Institute, held at Bryn Mawr College. The Summer Institute is a professional development program dedicated to the advancement of female leaders in administration of higher education. She also participated in the 2009-2010 Academic Leadership Development Program sponsored by the Southeastern Conference Academic Consortium.Dr. Thompson focuses her research on the health benefits of exercise for women and techniques used for body composition assessment. She is the author of over 60 peer-reviewed publications and articles for fitness professionals and general audiences. She is a former associate editor in chief for ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal and is currently the editor in chief for ACSM's Fit Society Page Newsletter.

Dr. Thompson is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology.�She is active in professional societies and is a past president of the Southeast Chapter of ACSM. She is also a former chair of the Physical Fitness Council for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Dr. Thompson received her BA in physical education and MA in exercise physiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned her PhD from the University of Virginia.

Chucked full of useless facts

I took a WITS personal fitness trainer class this fall and this text was a required purchase and required reading. Much of the information in this text is outdated and will never be uses by anyone. This text book is very poorly organized and truly painful to read. We never once opened the book in class. Instead we were given a workbook that kind of followed the text book but left huge sections of the text book alone. I think WITS knows the book is a bust but still needs it because they don't have anything else to teach the class with. My advice to WITS. Have someone with some editing skill redo the book and get rid of all the junk.
Then they might end up with a good 7th Edition. The book would be about half the size, be readable and contain information the student could relate to, understand and use. Isn't that the purpose of a textbook anyway.

Horrible

I was an instructor for a personal training course for which this book was required.

It is hands down the worst text I have read so far in my professional career as a personal trainer/fitness professional as well throughout my education (I hold a B.S. & M.S. in Exercise and Sports Science). The authors of this book attempted to cram one entire semester of exercise physiology into one chapter of this book. To say the least, it's unreasonable to expect anyone without a formal education in the fitness field to understand even 10% of it! The other chapters aren't any better.

There is no mention of anatomy, I've missed listing individual muscles, the importance of muscular balance, how to determine imbalances and how to correct them.

I would not recommend this book to be used for a personal training course. I would rather teach without a text than to use this one again.

If I could give less than 1 star I would give it a negative score.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION!!

I am an exercise science undergraduate student, and I find this book to be a fine choice for my current class in fitness evaluation and exercise prescription. I disagree with the other negative reviews about the book's content. But that is not why I am writing this review.

I am writing to warn fellow customers about the Kindle edition. I purchased the Kindle edition, and as far as I can tell most or all of the charts and graphs have been omitted. This is a big problem for a science-based book. At first I thought I could deal with the lack of charts and graphs, since I thought all the regular text was available to me. Not so. While trying to read Chapter 11 today, I came across so many omitted words and characters that I was unable to understand the text. I am now trying to get a refund from Amazon (when I purchased my Kindle edition it was $45.99), or a replacement in the form of a print edition. This is a very inconvenient time for this to happen to me because I have an exam in less than a week over the material I cannot read.

I usually love Amazon, but I am not happy with this kindle book at all!

I also know that giving this book one star for kindle edition problems is not the most appropriate in this review forum, but I'm not sure where else to put it, or how else to warn other customers that it is defective. I wish Amazon had a separate place to review kindle book functionality, so I wouldn't have to lump this in with all the book content reviews.

This is a new edition of this little (44pp) paperback, and has two pages of excellent color plates added. I strongly recommend it to any mantid hobbyist.

Moderately useful. Poor construction, lots of dismal black and white photos and drawings. It's a staple reference for people who keep mantids, but I don't find it so useful.

Incredible creatures . . .

I ordered this book just prior to purchasing one of the more exotic mantids . . . commonly called the "devil mantis". The name is incredibly appropriate based on the creature's looks and menacing posturing. It is however, like all the many species of mantids, completely harmless . . . unless you happen to be a bug, or for that matter, any creature smaller than it . . . or in some cases, not a whole lot bigger than it (there is video on YouTube of one capturing a hummingbird).

I have always been fascinated by the praying mantis, and had no idea how many different species there were until "stumbling" into some info online. This is a creature which seems quite unique in the insect world. I have no idea whether there is any substance to this, but it appears to have an "intelligence" greater than that seen in the insect world in general. It will watch you (moving its head about), as you watch it, and it will put on a somewhat unnerving threat display if you put your finger close to it. Amazingly, after a fairly short while, it gets to "know" you, and drops the threat, and will crawl up on your finger . . . intelligence?

This book is quite informative on an amazing creature. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it is a little pricey for its limited size. On the other hand, I would still recommend it because in searching around, there doesn't seem to be a great deal of published information on this fascinating member of the insect world.

Not the Worst, not the Best.

Franco Cardini manages to synthesize 1400 years of interaction between Europe and the Muslim world in one, handy tome. Despite its shortcomings (and they are noticeable) the book is a useful addition to anyone already initiated into the field of Middle East history -- this is not a book for consumption by the uninformed.
Despite a glaringly unsatisfactory bibliography, most of the facts in the book are sound. Every page is crammed with detail, and it's hardly worth taking notes from this book, as one's notes are likely to be as long as the book itself! Cardini generally avoids "fluff", and sticks to the matter at hand pedantically well. This is not a grandly-written narrative, but an intensely informative textbook.
However, there are a number of pitfalls Cardini makes, playing directly into the hands of the Politcally-Correct Establishment of the academic world. He dances awkwardly around the phrase "cross and crescent" in an attempt to play down the religious aspect of European-Muslim interaction, though it was a major aspect of European-Muslim relations for nearly a millenium. Instead, Cardini uses the clunky "Europe and Islam". Additionally, Cardini ignores a number of historical points. The swift, violent expansion of early Islam is boiled down to one dubious sentence, calling it, "a continuous, not always consistent process of conversion, imposed although seldom provoked."
Cardini also declares that the battle of Tours-Poitiers in 732 had no major impact on Muslim expansion into Western Europe, though he admits, a few pages later, that the battle did indeed stop Muslim armies pushing into Gaul. Though this academic double-talk does not pervade the rest of the book, it is indeed present. Furthermore, other historical events are belittled to the point of unimportance. The sack of the Vatican in 846 by Muslims -- a HUGE event in medieval history -- recieves no more notice than a one-phrase acknowledgement that a "desecration" occured.
However, despite occasional double-speak and the occasional questionable information, this book is a sound purchase for anyone already knowledgeable (to a small degree) in that field of history. Crammed with information not present in most wishy-washy books written for public consumption, Cardini does an excellent job at describing a bewilderingly complex series of interactions and conflicts that affect the world today.

needed footnotes and better bibliography

First of all I enjoyed this book considerably.
It was a "quick read" Though its style is not what I would classify as that designed for mass consumption (ie dumbed down), compared to many academically oriented history books the prose is light and can be absorbed quickly.
Although this book is a survey/overview of historic interaction between Europe and Islam it is quite selective in what it actually addresses; thus, I think that it is best for an audience which already has a general (needen't be expert) understanding of the periods covered. Someone with less knowledge could certainly read it with enjoyment but might be somewhat lost unless he/she were to do a little additional research to provide the general backdrop. For example, page 3 states that "medieval authors were unanimous (although wrong) in their opinion that Europe was the main seat of Christianity, if not its only one." The author neglects to explain the factual background for this: the Middle East was still mostly Christian thoughout much if not most of the Middle Ages as conversion was not immediate upon conquest by the armies of Islam. Most people today probably do not know this and some would be perplexed by Cardini's assertion.
The book addresses many of the arenas of conflict between Christendom and Islam. Initially he focuses on the conquest and reconquest of Spain. He then moves east.
What I liked best and wherein I think lies the great value of the book is the author's constant use of specific lesser known events and facts to illustrate the complexity of the interrelations between the two worlds. It brings the history alive and demonstrates that MOST IMPORTANT lesson of history: motivations and actions are invariably complex, inconsistent (within a given group/time/place) and arise from many sources.
Commencerate with this pleasure that I felt was frustration with the lack of reference materals to enable me to follow up on learning more about the various interesting details presented.

Scholarly Without Being Overwhelming....

Ryrie, perhaps best known for the Ryrie Study Bible, has here written a verse-by-verse Revelation commentary noteworthy for being sufficiently detailed and scripturally sound without being too overwhelming for the average layperson. For readers with a mindset to study but little or no background in Revelation, I recommend this solid commentary. Also, this updated edition has quite a few helpful charts. If after this book more depth is desired, try other dispensational commentaries such as those of Walvoord, Thomas, Couch (ed.), or Newell. (For those familiar with eschatology lingo, if you are a preterist, historicist, or postrib premillenialist in your endtimes interpretation, you will not like this book, since it is written from a pre-trib, pre-millenialist viewpoint.)

About the Author
Kevin Coval is the author of Schtick, L-vis Lives: Racemusic Poems, Everyday People and the American Library Association “Book of the Year” Finalist Slingshots: A Hip-Hop Poetica. He is the founder of Louder Than a Bomb: The Chicago Youth Poetry Festival, Artistic Director at Young Chicago Authors, and teaches at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Quraysh Ali Lansana is the author of eight poetry books, three textbooks, a children's book, editor of eight anthologies, and coauthor of a book of pedagogy. He is a faculty member of the Creative Writing Program of the School of the Art Institute and the Red Earth MFA Creative Writing Program at Oklahoma City University. He is also a former faculty member of the Drama Division of The Juilliard School. Lansana served as Director of the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing at Chicago State University from 2002-2011, where he was also Associate Professor of English/Creative Writing. Our Difficult Sunlight: A Guide to Poetry, Literacy & Social Justice in Classroom & Community (with Georgia A. Popoff) was published in March 2011 by Teachers & Writers Collaborative and was a 2012 NAACP Image Award nominee. His most recent books include The Walmart Republic w/ Christopher Stewart and reluctant minivan.

Nate Marshall is the author of Wild Hundreds. He won the Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize and served as a Zell Postgraduate Fellow at the University of Michigan. A Cave Canem Fellow, Nate won the 2014 Hurston/Wright Founding Members Award and the 2013 Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Award. He is a founding member of the poetry collective Dark Noise. He is also a rapper.

I'm Teaching This Book Next Year

I admit--I first spotted this book because of its badass cover. I mean, look at that cover! But reading through it has been immensely rewarding, especially in the wake of the Vanessa Place scandal (Google it if you're unaware). I teach poetry at a community college in the Pacific Northwest and the work in here--especially in its attention to sound, structure, and experimentation--really has the promise to light my students up. It also obliterates the notion that so many students arrive with: poetry is old, and white, and mummified. Instead we see it here shouting and dancing and bleeding and flirting and holding up one hell of a mirror to the rest of us.

This is poetry getting it heart and its teeth back. It's an incredibly exciting time to be reading--or writing--and this book maps that course.

Collection of some of the most memorable, most interesting, most head-nodding poems you won't find anywhere else. Do yourself a favor and peek 10 years into the future through this book.

Great Direction

Very good poems that were heartfelt and full of energy. I'm glad this exists and I hope to see more hip-hop inspired poems, I highly recommend it.
