Read it the first time for curiosity; the second time for fun.

I was curious about the notoriously banned book from the '40s, so decided to see what all the hoopla was about. It's really a shame that "Forever Amber" has fallen off the radar, so to speak, in the ensuing decades, because I found it absolutely unputdownable.

I'm not a fan of the "bodice ripper" genre, nor do I think this necessarily fits into that genre, which I usually find to be pretty light on actual historical detail. The historical detail and context in "Forever Amber" is incredibly impressive, and Kathleen Winsor really does recreate this world and the vibrant, licentious pageant that was the reign of Charles II. The descriptions are luscious, and if you're a fan of costume details, this is the equivalent of word crack.

The character of Amber is unapologetically self-serving, tunnel-visioned and maybe not the brightest tool in the shed, but watching her preen and sleep her way through adventure after Restoration adventure is absolutely absorbing, whether you like her or not. We get the court of Charles II, the Plague, the Great Fire, the awakenings of the American Colonies ... everything that makes this era such a compelling and entertaining setting.

Like some other reviewers, I probably could have done without the interwoven chapters dealing with Lady Castlemaine, the king's brother and sister, or this or that scheming duke or nobleman -- I felt myself wanting to hurry through these just to get back to the Amber-centric chapters, which are fortunately the overwhelming majority of the book, and more chances to sit there thinking, "Oh, no, she DIDN'T!"

There's no graphic sex -- that could never have passed muster in the 1940s -- but much is implied. If you're put off by loose morals and loose sexual attitudes, this isn't the book for you. (And the court of Charles II probably isn't the place for you.)

It's too bad there's only been one film version -- and that the one film version was made in an era of cinema in which a huge majority of the events and context of the book had to be left out for the movie to even pass the censors, resulting in a very watered-down adaptation that might more appropriately have been billed as "based on characters created by Kathleen Winsor" as opposed to an actual film treatment of "Forever Amber." I would love to see it remade in today's day and age, without the censorship that kept the book from being faithfully filmed in the 1940s. It would make a glorious cable series.

All in all, I entirely enjoyed it, have read it more than once for pure entertainment's sake, and have recommended it to others.

Saga of a "Rags to Riches" Harlot During the Restoration Period

This novel was a descriptive telling of an era of decadence which resulted from the strict past rule of Oliver Cromwell. The titled character Amber was used effectively as a tool to describe the ruling classes' extravagances and often times the horrors during the reign of Charles the II.
"Forever Amber" did not (for me) have the classical brilliance of "GWTW" nor the large cast of characters with in depth personalities. Amber was lacking in redeeming qualities to emotionally involve this reader in her various exploits. Having said that, however, this book should be judged on its own merits. The various story lines compelled me to join Amber on her many exciting journeys, too many to count, but here's a few: debtors' prison, the plague, the Great Fire of London,many unwanted pregnancies, mistress to the king and the never ending love interest On Her Part for Bruce.
The 900 plus page book did move very quickly as you are driven to read about her next adventure as it were. There are also the added bonuses of the various relationships between the royal members. Also, the political conniving of the Duke of Buckingham adds an extra flavor to the story. As many other reviewers have said, there is little or no sympathy for the title character. While it was interesting to read about all the affairs, decadence and lavishness of the rich, it did get overbearing at times.
For a novel of this length, it was an amazingly quick read compelling the reader to plough ahead. For this reader, there just wasn't enough payback after a 900 plus page read to have an unsatisfying ending ...SLIGHT SPOILER ...unless... the boat with her in it sunk! That being said, the book had very little parts that dragged. As you continue to tear through these pages it isn't long before the discovery sets in that the disposition of the main character will unfortunately ALWAYS REMAIN "FOREVER AMBER".

I purchased this book a while back and when I finally read it I was upset with myself for not reading it sooner. Kathleen brings a world long since gone back to life if just for an instant. I pitied Amber from birth never knowing her past, yet to become a powerful woman in the king's court. Everything Amber did was not just out of ambition but for survival in a world where the life span was short and beyond our control. Amber was a different type of girl/woman for her time, she was ahead of her time, just like Scarlett in Gone with the Wind. Can we really blame them for wanting more out of life?

This book is a collaboration of great minds and talents (heavy weights in the industry, if you like): a professor, dietitian and a chef. It's also heavy in weight - there are a lot of recipes and background information on how you go about eating certain foods and why. I'd call it a "good eating bible". There are endless tips and tricks and I buried my head in this for hours and still have a lot to learn and recipes to try out!!!
There are recipes including soups to meals with side dishes and also snacks and drinks, but the authors talk about lifestyle, research on the latest science on food and there are even success weight-loss stories in this 300-page book.

I think this has to be the best low carb book on the market. The way it's laid out, with the practical advice about following a nutritious LCHF diet from the dietitician first, then the sumptuous recipes, then the in-depth discussion of the science, is unique and really helps make the information digestible. LCHF works for as long as you stick to it and works best for people to whom it becomes a way of life - there's nothing about the way of life laid out in this book that seems especially difficult or unusual once you understand the reasons for it, and the recipes certainly don't give the impression that you'd be depriving yourself of anything. It's great that the science section was made as up-to-date as possible and that Grant Schofield points out those places where the evidence for newer ideas and explanations for newer observations are still incomplete. This brings the reader into the picture, instead of talking down to them.
I've been living the LCHF life for 5 years and I haven't lost weight, because I had no weight to lose. Instead I've lost acid reflux, headaches, joint pain, diarrhea, tinnitus, blurred vision, almost all colds and flus, insomnia, anxiety, and boredom. No doubt these are unbelievable claims, but they are not hard ones to test, and What The Fat? provides easy to follow instructions.

What the Fat? Great idea but recipes are in the hard copy!

Happy with the product and have already modified my eating habits. BUT there are very few recipes in the book and the the digial version suggest you buy the hard copy to get more recipes. Really can't understand why I should have to do this. I could have bought the hard copy but don't want to stockpile a bunch of paper!!

Although some parents and teachers may cringe at such touches, Silverstein's anti-establishment humor percolates as he lampoons conventions (the stork not only brings babies but "comes and gets the older folks/ When it's their time to go"), or discards decorum (a small gardener zips up his pants after watering the plants "that way"). No matter that the author's rhythms and rhymes can be sloppy, or that his annoying insistence on leavin' off the endin' to his ING's seems artificially folksy, Silverstein's ability to see the world from, as he says, "a different angle" will undoubtedly earn this book a wide audience. Grade 3 Up?Fifteen years after A Light in the Attic (1981) and 22 years after Where the Sidewalk Ends (1974, both HarperCollins), Silverstein, whose poetry has achieved cultlike popularity, offers readers another collection. While bodily functions seem to be the source of humor in more poems than in the earlier titles, and while there are fewer wonderful images here, the child appeal is as strong as ever. Once again, Silverstein's pen-and-ink drawings are the perfect accompaniment to the poems, always extending and often explaining the words. The book abounds in energetic wordplay ("I saw an ol' gnome/Take a gknock at a gnat/Who was gnibbling the gnose of his gnu") and childlike silliness ("I only ate one drumstick/At the picnic dance this summer...But everybody's mad at me,/Especially the drummer"). Silverstein writes wonderful nonsense verse, but he has used rhyme and rhythm to greater effect in the past. Well, finally. In this long-overdue follow-up to A Light In The Attic (1981), Silverstein once again displays the talent for wordplay and idea-play that keeps his poetry evergreen. In bumptious verse that seldom runs more than three or four stanzas, he introduces a gallery of daffy characters, including the Terrible Toy-Eating Tookle, a hamburger named James, blissfully oblivious Headphone Harold, and the so-attractive folk attending the ``Rotten Convention''--``Mr. Mud and the Creepin' Crud/And the Drooler and Belchin' Bob,'' to name but a few. The humor has become more alimentary with the years, but the lively, deceptively simple art hasn't changed a bit. Its puzzled-looking young people (with an occasional monster or grimacing grown-up thrown in) provide visual punchlines and make silly situations explicit; a short ten-year-old ``grows another foot''--from the top of his head--and a worried child is assured that there's no mouse in her hair (it's an elephant). Readers chortling their way through this inspired assemblage of cautionary tales, verbal hijinks, and thoughtful observations, deftly inserted, will find the temptation to read parts of it aloud irresistible. Silverstein's poetry is good for the soul both young and old

My kids immediately fell in love with Shel Silverstein's when I introduced them to his work about 7 years ago... They were 1 and 4 at the time. (The older one got his younger brother interested as the younger one got older.) They are now 8 and 11 years old, and they still get a kick out of reading Silverstein's poems: They laugh out loud when they read his poems, and I get great joy from that. So this is our 10th or so of his books, and the boys love it. Can't go wrong with silly, clean poems that bring laughter to little children. Good for adult hearts, too!

An interesting and enjoyable book to read. If you are a Shel Silverstein fan you will love this volume.

This is the third hardcover book I have read (Falling Up: Poems and Drawings by Shel Silverstein) by this author. As I have mentioned previously, this author has an original and unique talent to create unusual poems spiced with his drawings making his books interesting reads. I enjoyed this volume the most out of the three books I have read by Silverstein.

Each of the wonderful poems also includes the author’s own original and unique drawings. The combination makes for a fun to read book for both adults and younger readers. Like a lot of Silverstein’s books, there are messages and lessons of life we can all relate to reading his poetic words.
I really liked most of the poems in this volume, but some of my favorites in this book include the following: Sun hat, snow ball, unfair, crystal ball, no thank you, safe, my robot, sidewalking, Pinocchio, big eating contest, bad cold, people zoo, hypnotized, mirror, mirror, haunted, a battle in the sky, the mummy, a cat, a kid, and a mom, Lyin Larry, no, the smile makers and when I was your age.

If you are a Shel Silverstein fan you will love this book. I found it to be refreshing, amusing and entertaining.

A Wonderful Literary Way to Bond with Your Family

Almost everyone knows about this book and its author so I don't really need to go into detail about that. What I will say is that it is an awesome family bonding tool. I have six kids, ages 1 to 19, and they all enjoy listening to the poems from this book together. I'm a huge fan. Some of my favorite readings are in this book. I definitely enjoy sharing things I remember from my childhood with my kids and this is one of them.

What an amazing story! Inspirational in so many ways

I ordered several first edition copies for my 7th grade language class. What an amazing story! Inspirational in so many ways, this book also invites many more interdisciplinary connections for use in the classroom. I plan to have lessons on geography, self-reliance, early human history and innovations, and more. Although the narrative is a bit dense and exact in its detail, this in turn creates a "life in the dinghy" perception around the reader. It is truly remarkable in so many ways. As this features a "man vs. nature" conflict theme, it also invites a good deal of observation about the stressors on the human psyche and influence of people's dispositions and personalities. Excellent!

Inspiring with a Message

There are books that stand out in a person's life. This is such a book for me.

I read this book back in the 1970's as a teenager. The story, images and lessons from it still stand out in my mind years later. That is a measure of the impact that it had on me and may have on others. I wasn't aware then how deep that went. Years later I am able to recount a great deal from that read despite the intervening time. That is a measure of its impact and the vivid nature of the images and experiences recounted.

This is a story of survival. It is a true story. A family on a boat is set adrift when a pod of killer whales destroys their boat and they are set adrift. How they survive on a day to day basis learning the skills and discovering the hidden resources is progressively told.

More than a dull recounting of the challenges that they face and the rescue that ultimately comes, this is a book that explores the relationships between family members as they reach within themselves to survive the storms, the sun, the sharks, dehydration and every other challenge that an unforgiving environment can present.

I recommend this book for anyone, but in particular this is the type of book that can have an impact in the life of a young person who reads it. Especially in our western culture which is so overwrought by materialism and a sense of entitlement, this book has the ability, more-so than many others to pierce the veil of that thinking and present a story that is both riveting and also life-changing without coming across as moralistic or preaching.

Minimum age to read should probably be about 12 or 13 as some of the situations and stories recounted are stark. But they are realistic and add to the impact and flavor of this excellent book.

Since the decipherment of cuneiform in the 19th century, Bible scholars have searched the Akkadian texts for cognates to Biblical Hebrew lexemes. In the 20th century, their search was substantially facilitated by the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary (CAD) and Von Soden s Akkadisches Handwoerterbuch (Ahw). But the 21st century promises to usher in a new age for the critical utilization of the comparative lexical evidence, thanks to Hayim Tawil s Akkadian Lexical Companion for Biblical Hebrew. Tawil has systematically combed the standard dictionaries of Akkadian (and occasionally, Ugaritic) to list every potential or proposed cognate to the Biblical Hebrew lexicon. Individual studies, widely scattered in the periodical and monographic literature, have also been adduced. The author has organized the material according to such categories as idiomatic usage, phraseology, sequencing and denotation. And what I find especially significant and helpful is that you do not confine your interest to etymological equivalents but also embrace semantic and idiomatic relationships. This certainly enhances the usefulness of your work. While the prodigious amount of data you have assembled will appeal primarily to Hebrew Bible and/or East Semitic scholars, I think anyone with some knowledge with biblical Hebrew and Akkadian would want to consult this Lexical Companion from time to time in connection with linguistic interpretation in their own work.

Great for Bible Students!

I studied Biblical Hebrew before starting Akkadian with Huehnergard's grammar. I found Tawil's book to be very helpful in connecting these related languages. It made learning Akkadian much more fun, i.e., I didn't have to look up every word in the CAD to find cognates. Although it's not cheap, I highly recommend this book!

Non-stop Lexicographical fun!

For anyone with some acquaintance with Hebrew and Akkadian, this book is truly wonderful! As pointed out by the author in the introduction, much more is known about Akkadian than ancient Hebrew--due to the preservation of hundreds of thousand of Akkadian cuneiform tablets. It is great fun to peruse this book and look up the Hebrew words you encounter in your reading of biblical Hebrew--as well as to look up words that just pop into your head. Also included is a lexicon of biblical Aramaic, an index of biblical names, and a list of Akkadian words and their Hebrew equivalents.

The discussion of Hebrew in this book is greatly enriched by phrases illustrating Akkadian cognates. One of the most illuminating and timeless is an Akkadian phrase cited in reference to the Hebrew word for testicle (ishku in Akkadian,p.39): "if a woman should crush a man's testicle during a quarrel." The name for God "El Shaddai" is noted as related to the Akkadian word for mountain "shadu"--suggesting that the name is that of a mountain god.
