Jos� Villagr�n was the leader of the modern movement in Mexico and head of the School of Architecture in the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de M�xico. Ricardo Legorreta worked with him for more than ten years before establishing his own practice in 1964.

I got this book after getting a chance of meeting Ricardo Legorreta, he is one of the best Mexican architects of our time and for sure an icon in contemporary architecture now around the world!!, this book gives interesting plans, sketches and pictures than tells the new evolution that the father to son transition is happening in their firm, the material quality of the book was superb! very satisfied with the book is definitely one to have if your into fine architecture.

Superb, unique treasure-trove of knowledge!

This is a superb text for all current and future practitioners of statistics. Richard Hamming wrote this book with a clear pedagogical vision of how to approach the subject in a clear yet nontrivial manner. Particularly clear and deep coverage of generating functions cannot be found in any other book ever written. Topics that explore Shannon entropy and related concepts are also covered in unique manner that simply cannot be found in other publications. Basic philosophical assumptions that need to be made to understand theories of probability and the nature of stochastic methods are discussed with wit and in depth.
I highly recommend this book to all readers who use statistics in they everyday work. That includes experts who actually develop new statistical methods themselves as well as curious individuals who would like to understand more about probability. The book is so well written that it should be recommended as a desk reference to all educated people who want to understand basic ideas and methods that fuel the theory and practice of probability. I am truly sorry that the maximum rating is only five stars. This book certainly should be rated above any maximum one can think of. Buy it, read it and enjoy the process!

Perfect for the Scientist or Engineer

R. W. Hamming was one of the great applied mathematicians of the 20th century and was a good writer. This was his best book. I would not use this for a text to teach from. However, for anyone who has had calculus and wants to get into probability, this is my first recommendation. It is a great book to read and is full of tricks and insights. It is much better to see generating functions here than in some dry merciless presentation. I heartily recommend this book.

Best serious, yet informal, introduction to probability

Some noted mathematicians and scientific theorists are great teachers and writers, others not. Hamming was one of the former and this is a fine book. It is the one book I grab when I want to understand anything about probability and its applications. Not only does it cover a wide range of probability related topics, but it also discusses philosophical and working assumptions in depth with great humor and insight.

I wish that I had known of this book when I was in graduate school. However, it has even more use for a practitioner or teacher than for a first time student, as it gives one new insights with each reading of the material.

One thing, when Hamming says to go and "work it out" to gain insight, take him at his word and go at it. He knew his stuff and you will too if you spend some serious time with this text.

His is a legacy of what good government is like and how a successful national leader ...

My friend, Ken Fong, found the book so compelling that he bought a bushel so he can give a copy to each of his friends as he ran into them in daily encounters. At age 90, this is most likely the last book by Lee Kuan Yew. Lee was Singapore’s first prime minister in 1959 and led the city state to full independence in 1965 when the rest of Malaysia rather unceremoniously invited Singapore to go their separate ways. By the time he stepped down in 1990, Singapore has been transformed into a First World metropolis. His is a legacy of what good government is like and how a successful national leader should behave.

As the book jacket stated, with little else left to prove, he looks ahead to offer his unvarnished view of the future shape of the world. In reading his view of the world, the reader will come to understand the core beliefs of this remarkable man. Some of these include:

(1) For any nation to succeed, clean government is a must. Road to a clean government is to pay the civil servants generously so that there is no reason for corruption. For those that do stray and gets caught, the punishment needs to be harsh for betraying the public trust.

(2) Democracy is no panacea. If the citizens are poorly educated and have no idea of what democracy is all about and if the country lacks a history of progressive thinking and culture of individual equality, the introduction of democracy will fail. As Lee predicted in his book, winter inevitably followed Arab Spring because tribal based feudal systems of the Middle East cannot nurture democracy.

(3) Education is the necessary foundation to any successful developing nation and the access to quality education must be equal to all citizens, male and female. Educated workforce is vital to economic development and a growing economy gives the population opportunities to a better life and thus a willingness to support their government. Thus in his view, the caste system will always hold India back from realizing its full potential and keeping women from education will block the development of Islamic countries.

(4) Diversity in a population trumps homogeneous population because diversity means more diverse gene pool and greater range of creative thinking and capacity for innovation. From his point of view, the U.S. greatest strength is its welcoming attitude towards immigrants. By the same token, Japan’s inability to accept anything foreign, even ethnic Japanese who has lived abroad is the root of its inevitable decline.

Hi book deals with major global topics and each major regions of the world. On China, his impression of Xi Jinping is in the “Nelson Mandela class of persons,” and Deng Xiaoping is undoubtedly the most impressive international leader he has ever met. Key difference between the US (a benign power) and China is that China does not believe in “evangelizing their form of government.” His biggest concern on China is if the future young generation of Chinese, not having experienced the challenges of China’s difficult past, gets overly nationalistic and aggressive.

From his visits to the U.S, “I came to appreciate fully the dynamism of the entrepreneurial American.” Lee sees long-term success of the U.S. resting on its ability to continue to attract “bright and restless immigrants from the world.” As for the competing influences of the U.S. and China in Asia, he felt that even though the US military budget is still six times greater than that of China, China has advantage of proximity in competing for influence in its neighboring states. He seems to think that both sides need to find mutual accommodations around a stale mate.

Lee is considerably less optimistic about Europe. He sees two major hindrances. The flaw behind the Euro is monetary integration without fiscal integration between 27 nations with wide and disparate stages of economic development. He sees no hope for fiscal integration ever. Secondly, Europe is afflicted with the welfare state mentality and stifling labor laws that discourage entrepreneurialism, innovation and striving for productivity. Rather condescendingly, Lee thought Europe might be able to get away with the welfare state mind-set if they were competing with Fiji or Tonga.

The book jacket endorsements list some of world’s who’s who as heads of state, diplomats and international notables. But I don’t think that was the reason Ken liked the book so much that he became a volunteer propagandist of Lee’s worldview. In Lee, he sees and the world sees a great statesman who successful synergized his impeccable western education with his innate Asian values to show the world how a small port city can integrate into the global economy and let the people thrive. He has a lot to say and I hope the politicians in Washington will read his book.

About the Author

Davd Knoke (Ph.D., University of Michigan 1972) coauthored Network Analysis (1982) and has published fifteen books and more than a hundred articles and book chapters, primarily on organizations, networks, politics, and social statistics. He was principal co-investigator on several National Science Foundation-funded projects on voluntary associations, lobbying organizations in national policy domains, and organizational surveys of diverse establishments. A current project on the Global Information Sector examines strategic alliance network evolution among international corporations. At Minnesota, he teaches a graduate network analysis seminar that attracts students from diverse disciplines.

Song Yang (Ph.D. University of Minnesota, 2002) is Professor at the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Arkansas. He also holds Qianren Professorship with School of Sociology and Political Science at Shanghai University. His research areas are social network analysis, sociology of work, and organizational studies. He published Social Network Analysis, Second Edition with David Knoke (Sage, 2008), and the Invisible Hands of Political Parties in Presidential Elections: Party Activists and Political Aggregation from 2004 to 2012 with Andrew Dowdle, Scott Limbocker, Patrick A. Stewart, and Karen Sebold (Palgrave MacMillan, 2013). He�has published more than 20 articles in various peer reviewed journals such as Party Politics, Social Science Research, Sociological Spectrum, and Sociological Inquiry.

Great overview of SNA

A very good beginning text that presents an overview of social network analysis (SNA). It is an easy read that will allow one to understand the basics of SNA, including an overview of the mathematical elements. Also it has a nice reference list for the reader who desires a deeper understanding.

This is an approach I'm considering for my own research. I had no previous knowledge of this specific method, although I'm well versed in similar techniques. Overall, I thought this was well-written and not too overwhelming at this stage of my investigation. Most helpful.

This clan, left homeless by the same disaster, have little interest in the helpless girl who comes from the tribe they refer to as the "Others." Only their medicine woman sees in Ayla a fellow human, worthy of care. She painstakingly nurses her back to health--a decision that will forever alter the physical and emotional structure of the clan. Although this story takes place roughly 35,000 years ago, its cast of characters could easily slide into any modern tale. The members of the Neanderthal clan, ruled by traditions and taboos, find themselves challenged by this outsider, who represents the physically modern Cro-Magnons. And as Ayla begins to grow and mature, her natural tendencies emerge, putting her in the middle of a brutal and dangerous power struggle.

Although Jean Auel obviously takes certain liberties with the actions and motivations of all our ancestors, her extensive research into the Ice Age does shine through--especially in the detailed knowledge of plants and natural remedies used by the medicine woman and passed down to Ayla. You MUST read this Series

To celebrate the upcomming release of Jean M. Auel's new Earth Series release, The Land of Painted Caves, due March 29th, 2011, we have a bargain kindle release of the first book in the series.

If you have not read this series, you are in for a treat. The novels are set 18,000 year ago at a time when the Cromagnon (us) and Neanderthal people coexist. Although certain poetic license is taken with the series, the novels are thouroughly reseached and have received a great deal of praised for their accuracy.

Ayla is a five-year old Cro-Magnon girl who is suddenly orphaned and left homeless by an earthquake that destroys her family's camp. She is found, near death, by a group of Neanderthal people, the "Clan" who are looking for a new home after their cave is destroyed in the same earthquake. A brother and sister, Iza, the medicine woman of the group, and Creb, the "Mog-ur" or shaman, adopt the young girl. The first book in the series focuses on Ayla's experience growing up amoung the Clan where she never quite fits in because of the differences in her nature. She lacks the Clan's strenght and 'memories' but is quicker to learn and to adapt to new circumstances.

If this doesn't sound like your cup of tea - at least try the sample anyway. This is a truely extraordinary series that no one should miss. Fans wait patiently for years as each new book is researched and written, and then savor it as an extraordinary treat.

still a favorite read

This is one of my favorite books. I've re-read it many times. The bonus content was irrelevant for me, as I downloaded to my kindle paper white and it doesn't enlarge pictures, only type face. But if you have it on a kindle fire or any other computer type device you will see a flap map image of the territory. same cost as regular e-book. This first book in the series garnered much acclaim, especially from the anthropology community. There are detailed description of flora, fauna, hunting, making things by hand from centuries ago. Mostly, I love the story of Ayla. There is one graphic rape, but it's integral to the story on many levels. There are some repetitive thoughts from the main character, but I still love this story. It is well written and filled with grit and determination. Two unique cultures (the only two that exist in this world juxtapositioned perfectly in this story.

I quickly fell in love with the characters and the descriptions of the world ...

I read thin book for the first time when 20 years ago. I quickly fell in love with the characters and the descriptions of the world around them. Jean Auel is able to create a world that is so real that you can not wait to visit. I have always loved books with strong female characters and this book does not disappoint me in that area. Ayla is awe inspiring. I could not read the book fast enough and then was upset when I reached the end of the book. Luckily there are 5 more books in the series that allow you to follow Ayla on her journey.

I high recommend this book for anyone.
